Buy a refurbished or discounted pair only after you know who checked it, what the warranty and return terms cover, what condition the wear parts are in, and what the box includes. Then compare its full cost with a new discounted pair and test it promptly after delivery. “Refurbished” does not guarantee the same inspection, accessories, or coverage from every seller.
What does “refurbished” mean on this listing?
Treat refurbished as a seller’s description of a process, not a standard grade. Before buying, find out who performed the work, what was inspected and tested, and whether parts were repaired or replaced.
- Manufacturer-refurbished: The manufacturer may describe a specific inspection and repair process. Bose says its Certified Refurbished products are inspected, tested, cleaned, and restored with genuine Bose parts when needed, including new earcups as an example of a replacement component. - Retailer- or marketplace-refurbished: Ask which company did the work and what its written standards require. Do not assume the manufacturer tested a product sold by another seller.
- Open-box or used: These labels may describe a return, opened packaging, prior ownership, or a store demo rather than a completed refurbishment. Audeze says its B-stock/refurbished units are tested and reconditioned, while used, open-box, and store-demo items may not have been inspected or tested. Audeze’s definitions
Harman says its refurbished products are tested against original features and specifications, with functional or cosmetic parts replaced as needed. Check the return window and warranty before paying
Read the terms for the seller, product condition, and country you are buying from. Confirm the return deadline, who handles a claim, which failures are covered, and whether refurbished items qualify. Save a copy of the listing and policy in case the terms change.

Manufacturer policies illustrate why the region matters: Bose currently lists a 30-day return policy and a one-year warranty for Certified Refurbished products. Inspect wear parts and cosmetic condition separately
A cosmetic grade does not tell you everything about function, and a working pair can still have worn parts that affect comfort. Look closely at the ear pads for peeling, cracks, or flattened foam, and check the headband cushion, hinges, sliders, yokes, ports, and buttons for damage or looseness.

Read the seller’s grading definitions rather than relying on a label such as “excellent.” eBay’s headphone and home-audio grading scale gives cosmetic levels and functional criteria, including no sound distortion; those definitions apply to that marketplace and should not be assumed elsewhere. eBay’s condition grading scales
If pads need replacing, search for replacement over-ear headphone ear pads that match the exact model number. Fit and availability vary by model; do not assume pads made for a similar-looking headphone will fit.

Confirm exactly what comes in the box
Check the listing’s contents rather than assuming refurbished packaging matches a new retail box. Depending on the model and how you plan to use it, confirm whether it includes:
- Charging or audio cable
- Carrying case
- Detachable microphone or cable
- Airplane adapter, if you need one
- Other model-specific accessories you rely on
Harman says its refurbished products include accessories originally shipped with factory-sealed products, while Audeze warns that accessories for B-stock/refurbished units may differ from new versions. Compare the full offer with a new discounted pair
Compare the same model and generation, then account for condition, seller accountability, coverage, return rights, shipping, included accessories, and any likely replacement-pad cost. A lower sticker price alone does not establish better value. The sources cited here do not support a universal savings threshold, so judge the actual offers rather than applying a fixed percentage rule.

Use the return period to check the functions that matter to you. Charge the headphones fully, consult the manufacturer’s published battery expectation for that exact model and test conditions, and see whether the delivered pair performs as expected. There is no single battery-health test established for every headphone model, so avoid treating an unsupported percentage as a pass mark.

If something is wrong, contact the seller promptly and follow the stated return or warranty process before the deadline. Keep the packaging and accessories until you have finished checking the pair.
