Choose the output you need first
There are two different jobs that are often grouped under “ripping”: making a smaller, newly encoded video file, or extracting selected disc content into a disc-derived file. The right software depends on which result you want.
For smaller MP4, MKV, or WebM files
HandBrake is a transcoder. It reads supported sources and creates a new video file in MP4, MKV, or WebM; it always converts the video rather than passing the original video stream through unchanged. That can reduce file size, but a smaller file is not a lossless copy. HandBrake can pass through certain audio types, but that does not change how it handles video. For retaining selected disc streams
If you want to select disc titles or tracks and keep their video streams rather than make a newly encoded video, look for a workflow built around extraction or remuxing rather than transcoding. MakeMKV describes conversion and streaming for DVD and AVCHD; check its purchase page for the current scope and terms. Do not assume that every program described as a “ripper” preserves the original streams: verify its video behavior and track-selection controls before paying.

Check that your disc and computer are supported
Confirm the program’s operating-system requirements, the disc types it supports, and the output formats it can create. HandBrake documents support for Linux, Mac, and Windows and lists DVD among its source workflows. MakeMKV’s purchase page describes DVD and AVCHD functionality. These descriptions do not establish that either product can process every disc, especially one with protection the software does not support.
You also need hardware that can read a physical DVD. If your computer has no optical drive, check that a compatible external DVD drive works with both your computer and the software before buying either item. You can compare USB external DVD drives; no particular model is endorsed here.

Understand copy-protection limits before paying
Do not treat “DVD support” as a promise that software can defeat copy protection. HandBrake explicitly says it does not defeat or circumvent copy protection and does not work with DRM, including many commercial DVDs. VLC’s Windows FAQ likewise notes that some newer DVD protection mechanisms are unsupported. If a particular protected disc is essential to your decision, check the vendor’s current documentation for that exact limitation; a general compatibility claim is not enough.
Compare license scope and current availability

Compare what each license covers, not just whether a product has a “free” option. In particular, distinguish DVD functions from Blu-ray functions and check whether the feature you need is included under the current terms.

Check the workflow, not just the format list
A long list of output formats does not tell you whether software suits your task. Before committing, look for clear controls to choose the title or content you need and, where applicable, select audio, subtitles, or tracks. Check whether the program re-encodes video or retains the source stream, and whether its workflow matches the file you intend to use. If you are comparing products, weigh these details alongside operating-system support, disc compatibility, protection limits, and license scope rather than relying on a broad “best ripper” ranking.

In the United States, Section 1201 of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act addresses circumvention of technological measures that control access. The U.S. Copyright Office states: “For example, section 1201 makes it illegal for a person to decrypt a DVD containing a copyrighted motion picture or to bypass a password control to access a subscription video streaming service.” That is the agency’s general explanation in its Section 1201 2018: Frequently Asked Questions; it is not a conclusion about every factual situation, and owning a disc does not by itself establish that circumvention is lawful.

The Copyright Office describes exemptions as limited and temporary. Its Section 1201 rulemaking page says the tenth triennial proceeding is underway; if exemptions are renewed, the stated renewal period is October 2027–October 2030.
