Before paying, verify who is selling the iPhone, what the return policy allows, whether the exact model works with your carrier, and whether it is locked. For a used or refurbished phone, also check battery health, repair history, condition, warranty, and Activation Lock. These checks help you avoid a phone you cannot activate, use, or return.
1. Check the seller and return terms
Buy from a seller you can identify and contact, and read the return policy before ordering. Confirm the return window, which issues qualify, how to start a return, who pays return shipping, and whether the phone must be returned in its original packaging. For a pre-owned iPhone, ask what the seller’s certification or inspection process actually checks; the word “certified” does not, by itself, tell you what was inspected.
Apple advises buyers of pre-owned iPhones to use a reliable seller and understand the return period, reasons, and method. Ask for clear information about physical damage, battery health, and parts and service history when available.
2. Confirm the exact model and carrier compatibility
Do not rely on a listing that says only “unlocked” or names a broad iPhone family. Confirm the exact model and that it works with your intended carrier and plan. In the U.S., eSIM availability depends on both the carrier and cellular plan, so check with the carrier before ordering an eSIM-only or eSIM-dependent setup. Will my new iPhone be unlocked?
If you can inspect the device, open Settings > General > About and look for Carrier Lock (called “Service Provider Lock” in Apple’s guidance). “No SIM restrictions” means the iPhone is unlocked. If a provider is named, the phone is restricted to that carrier. If you are buying remotely, ask the seller to confirm the lock status in writing and make the return option clear if that status is incorrect.
Check any financing terms on the specific offer, rather than assuming all installment plans behave alike. Apple’s U.S. shopping help says an iPhone financed through the AT&T Installment Plan, T-Mobile Equipment Installment Plan, or Verizon Device Payment Program is locked to that carrier until paid in full.

3. Make sure Activation Lock is off
Activation Lock is different from a carrier lock: it can prevent a new owner from setting up the phone. Apple’s guidance is direct: “Don’t buy an iPhone if Activation Lock is enabled.” Ask the seller to erase the phone and remove it from their account before shipment, or verify that it reaches setup without requesting the previous owner’s Apple Account credentials.
If an online order arrives with the message “iPhone Locked to Owner,” Apple says to return it. Do not accept a promise that the prior owner will remove the lock later.

4. For a pre-owned iPhone, check battery and parts history
Battery health
Ask for a current battery-health reading rather than a vague assurance that the battery is “good.” Apple says battery health is available in Settings > Battery Health or, on newer iOS versions, Settings > Battery Health & Charging. Menu names and available details can vary by iOS version and model.
Parts and Service History
On iOS 15.2 or later, some iPhone models may show repair information under Settings > General > About > Parts and Service History. Its presence depends on the model and repair history. Apple says an Unknown label can mean a part was not installed completely, is not genuine or was previously used, or is not functioning as expected. Ask the seller to explain any listed repair or unknown part, and weigh that information alongside the warranty and return policy.

5. Compare what “refurbished” actually means
Refurbished is not a universal inspection standard. Compare the seller’s written description of testing, replaced parts, battery condition, cosmetic grade, warranty, and returns with what you need. Apple’s Certified Refurbished program is a specific offer: Apple says refurbished iOS devices include a new battery and outer shell, receive full functional testing, and include genuine Apple replacement parts as needed. Apple states that each Certified Refurbished product has a one-year limited warranty and that the program offers savings of up to 15%; the maximum saving is not a guaranteed discount on any particular iPhone.
Inventory and prices change. For example, Apple’s refurbished store listed an unlocked 128GB iPhone 16 in Ultramarine for $659 when accessed; check the current listing rather than treating that price or configuration as permanent. These terms describe Apple’s own program and should not be assumed to apply to another seller’s refurbished phone.

6. Compare the purchase on the terms that matter
Use the same criteria for each candidate so a lower price does not hide a weaker return policy or an incompatible model.

7. Know which return policy applies
Apple’s U.S. Store guidance allows returns or exchanges within 14 days after receipt, subject to the phone being in original condition and including all parts, accessories, and packaging. That is Apple’s policy for its own U.S. Store purchases, not a general iPhone return guarantee. Apple says purchases from other retailers are governed by those retailers’ policies, and products can be returned only in the country where they were purchased. Check the policy attached to your actual order, especially if buying from a marketplace seller or across borders.

8. Inspect the phone as soon as it arrives
- Compare the delivered phone with the listing. Check the model, storage, color, stated condition, and included accessories before the return window runs down.
- Start setup. Confirm the phone is not Activation Locked and does not request the previous owner’s account credentials.
- Check carrier status and service. Review Settings > General > About for Carrier Lock status, then confirm the phone can connect using your intended carrier and plan.
- Review battery and parts information. Check the relevant Battery and Parts and Service History screens when available, and compare the results with the seller’s claims.
- Act promptly if something is wrong. Save the listing and order details, document the mismatch, and contact the seller through the stated return process. If the device shows “iPhone Locked to Owner,” return it rather than relying on a future unlock promise.
