Before buying an indie simulation game on Steam, check whether your PC meets its listed requirements, what recent players report, whether it is still in Early Access, and how much of the game is playable now. Compare the live listing with your own needs; Steam’s refund policy is limited and is not a guaranteed try-before-you-buy option.

1. Confirm that the game fits your system

On the game’s Steam Store page, find the system requirements and supported operating systems. Compare them with your computer’s operating system, processor, memory, graphics hardware, and available storage. Steam specifically advises checking hardware requirements as well as compatible operating systems: Steam Support’s platform compatibility guidance.

  • Check the minimum requirements to see whether the game is intended to run on your system, and the recommended requirements for a better target. Treat these as the developer’s published guidance, not a guarantee of smooth performance on every configuration.
  • If you use a handheld or a non-Windows setup, do not assume compatibility just because the game is sold on Steam. Look for platform-specific compatibility information and recent player reports relevant to your device.

2. Read recent reviews, not just the headline score

Steam shows recent and lifetime review scores separately. Its review system gives prominence to reviews that are recent and helpful, so the displayed selection can tell a different story from the lifetime score. Read the review dates and details as well as the overall rating. Steamworks documentation explains how Steam presents reviews.

Look for repeated, recent reports that affect the way you want to play, such as crashes, poor performance, bugs, save problems, confusing controls, or important missing features. A complaint from years ago may no longer describe the current build; a recurring report from recent players deserves closer attention. Reviews are individual experiences, so use patterns rather than treating one post as proof.

3. Decide whether Early Access is right for you

Check whether the store page labels the game as Early Access. Steam describes these games as works in progress and advises buying only if you are excited to play the game in its current state—not solely because of what might be added later. Read the developer’s account of what works now, what remains unfinished, and what the roadmap proposes. Planned features are not promises that a game will be completed on a particular schedule. Steam’s Early Access FAQ explains the program.

Steam may add an Early Access notice when a developer has not posted a qualifying update for more than 12 months. Check the game’s own update history and store page for current context rather than assuming an old roadmap means development is active. The notice threshold is a platform policy, not a measure of how good or complete a game is.

4. Check whether the simulation matches what you want to play

“Simulation” covers very different experiences. Use the listing’s description, screenshots, video, tags, and feature list to assess what you will actually do and how the game’s systems fit together. Consider whether you want detailed management, construction, resource planning, vehicle operation, automation, or a slower sandbox pace. Focus on evidence about the current game, especially if it is in Early Access; a feature mentioned as planned is not necessarily playable.

5. Compare the current price with the playable content and refund terms

Check the live store page for the current price and purchase terms; both can change. For an Early Access game, judge the price against the content available now, not just the finished game the developer hopes to make. If you are comparing titles, weigh their simulation focus, recent player feedback, development status and update activity, system fit, price, and currently playable content.

Steam’s standard refund guidance says Valve will issue a refund upon request for a title requested within 14 days of purchase and played for less than two hours. Requests outside those conditions may still be submitted for review, but approval is not guaranteed. Read Steam’s refund guidance and make your decision with those limits in mind.
