Buy an Early Access simulation game only if its current build already looks worth playing to you. Before paying, check what simulation systems work now, what the developer says is unfinished, whether the game suits your PC and preferred controls, how recently it has been updated, and the refund rules for the storefront where you will buy it. Future features and release dates are plans, not guarantees.
Start with the game you can play today
Steam describes Early Access games as works in progress and advises buyers to choose one only if they are excited to play it in its current state. Its guidance matters especially for simulation games, where a listing may describe a broad future vision while the present build offers only part of the intended management, building, operating, or progression systems. Review the current description, screenshots, and gameplay footage, then identify the core loop that is actually playable now. Steam Support’s Early Access FAQ also warns that future changes can substantially alter a game.
- Write down the systems you want to use or manage, then check whether each is playable now or merely planned.
- Look for recent footage that shows the relevant systems in action, rather than relying only on promotional images or a roadmap.
- Ask whether the current build would interest you even if no additional feature arrived.
If the answer to that last question is no, waiting is safer than paying for a promise.
Read the developer’s Early Access plan
On Steam, each Early Access game has a developer questionnaire on its store page. Read the Early Access section for the developer’s account of what is playable, what remains unfinished, what feedback it wants, and how it describes its plans. Treat this as the developer’s stated direction—not a verified schedule or guarantee that every listed feature will arrive. Valve’s Steamworks Early Access documentation describes the format as a paid, playable work in progress and emphasizes evaluating the game as it exists now.

Do not assume that a game will leave Early Access by a particular date, or that it will reach full release at all. Steam says the developer decides when a game is ready to leave Early Access and cautions that some developers may be unable to finish their games. The sources do not establish a reliable category-wide completion rate or typical time to release, so a confident percentage or standard timeline would be misleading.
Check fit: requirements, controls, and current features
Compatibility is specific to the individual game and your setup; general Early Access guidance cannot establish it. Before purchase, check the title’s current store listing and look for:

- Input options and whether the controls you prefer are supported in the current build.
- Accessibility details and compatibility notes relevant to how you play.
- Gameplay footage showing the simulation systems and input method that matter to you.
For a simulation game, a feature’s presence in a plan does not establish that it works in the current build. If a specific control scheme, system, or feature is essential, confirm it in current listing information or recent gameplay before buying.
Use update history as a signal, not a verdict
Review dated developer announcements and the store page’s update history. Steam says it adds a store-page note when a game has gone more than 12 months without an update and without an update-type event. That notice is a reason to investigate the game’s current condition, not proof that development has stopped. Read the dates and substance of the available updates rather than treating a roadmap or an old announcement as evidence of recent progress.

Compare games on the same practical criteria
If you are choosing between several Early Access simulation games, compare the actual listings side by side rather than comparing one game’s current build with another game’s roadmap.

Check refund terms before you start playing
Refund conditions vary by storefront, so read the current policy where you plan to buy. Steam’s published standard offer is for requests made within 14 days of purchase and with less than two hours of playtime; Early Access playtime counts toward that two-hour limit. Steam’s refund page says it was last updated April 23, 2024, so check the current Steam Refunds policy for the terms in force when you buy. Steam’s Early Access FAQ says those purchases use the standard refund policy.

Epic Games Store has its own policy. Its official refund policy discusses Early Access or beta products and states a less-than-two-hours-of-runtime condition under its stated eligibility rules. Do not assume that Steam’s 14-day rule or any other platform’s conditions apply to an Epic purchase. Check the current policy and consider any consumer rights that apply in your jurisdiction.
On any storefront, know how playtime is counted before launching the game. An unfinished game may use up the available playtime allowance while you test it, so the refund policy is not a substitute for deciding whether the current build is worth its price.
