Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Before paying for a used Steam Deck or another gaming handheld, confirm the exact model and storage, inspect and test the hardware, check what warranty or return protection actually applies, and compare the asking price with Valve’s certified-refurbished option. A short in-person check can reveal obvious problems, but it cannot prove battery runtime, rule out every intermittent fault, or definitively establish that a device is not stolen or account-restricted.
1. Confirm the exact model and storage
Do not rely on the listing title, case label, or seller’s memory. Ask the seller to show the system information or storage screen and verify the actual capacity and whether the unit is LCD or OLED. Valve’s current comparison lists a 256GB LCD and 512GB and 1TB OLED configurations; older LCD configurations also exist. Check the exact unit against Valve’s model comparison.
Record the model and capacity before comparing prices. A configuration mismatch can make an apparently attractive listing a poor comparison with another device.
2. Inspect the body and screen in good light
Examine the handheld closely before turning it on. Look for cracks, deep impact marks, uneven seams, evidence of liquid exposure or poor repairs, and damage around the USB-C port. Check that the screen has no scratches or visible image defects. If possible, view it at different brightness levels and against several colors; a normal menu may not reveal every pixel or display problem.

#1 Best Overall
- 1TB NVMe SSD
- 1280 x 800 HDR OLED display with premium anti-glare etched glass, 7.4" Diagonal display size up to 90Hz refresh rate
- Wi-Fi 6E
- 50Whr battery; 3-12 hours of gameplay (content-dependent)
- Carrying case with removable liner
- Check that the case is not visibly swollen or distorted. If it appears swollen, stop handling the device and do not press or pry it.
- Look for loose or damaged buttons and controls rather than assuming cosmetic wear is the only issue.
- Do not treat a visual inspection as equivalent to a technical examination. Valve says its certified-refurbishment process checks the screen and internals, among other things.
3. Test controls, touch features, sound and connections
With the seller’s permission, check every input rather than testing only the controls you use most. A game or an available input-test screen can help reveal sticking, missed or inconsistent inputs.
- Press every face button, the D-pad, shoulder buttons and rear grip buttons; test both triggers through their full travel.
- Move each stick in all directions and test its click. Check both trackpads and the touchscreen.
- Test gyro controls if they matter to you.
- Listen to both speakers and test the headphone output if practical.
- Connect to Wi-Fi, plug in the charger and check that the device responds normally.
These checks can identify faults present during the meeting, but they do not guarantee that a control or connection will never fail intermittently.
4. Treat the battery-health reading as a clue
If the seller is willing and able, ask to view battery health in Desktop Mode. Regard the displayed figure as an indication, not a guaranteed estimate of runtime or a universal pass/fail threshold. Community suggestions about acceptable battery percentages are anecdotal; Valve does not publish a universal acceptance percentage for private-sale devices. Valve does assess battery health as part of its certified-refurbishment process.

Valve’s model comparison gives manufacturer estimates of 2–8 hours for the LCD’s 40Wh battery and 3–12 hours for the OLED’s 50Wh battery, depending on the content being played. These are content-dependent estimates for the models, not predictions of how long a particular used unit will last. A brief meeting cannot establish actual battery life.
5. Run a short workload, if the seller agrees
Boot a game or demanding application and let it run briefly. Observe whether the image remains stable, controls continue to respond, charging behaves normally and the unit stays on. Listen for unusual fan noise and watch for shutdowns or graphical artifacts.
This is a basic functional screen, not a stress test. It cannot rule out faults that appear only after longer use, at particular temperatures, or intermittently.

6. Avoid opening the handheld during a routine inspection
Do not disassemble a seller’s device as a shortcut to checking its condition. Valve warns that damage caused by opening or modifying the handheld is not covered by its product warranty. iFixit’s LCD battery-replacement guide describes a strongly adhered lithium-ion battery and warns about heat and puncture hazards. If repair is needed, it is a separate job requiring consent, appropriate skill and model-specific instructions—not a casual buyer check.
7. Ask about the account, purchase record and warranty
Ask the seller to remove their account. Where practical, have them complete setup and connect the device to the internet before money changes hands. Request the original purchase documentation if available and keep a dated receipt or written record of the sale, including the serial number.

- Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
- Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
- Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
- Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
- The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.
Valve’s hardware warranty describes one year from shipment for covered defects in materials or workmanship, subject to the warranty terms. Consumers in the EU, UK, Quebec, Australia and New Zealand instead have the statutory warranties or guarantees applicable in their purchase jurisdiction. Service can depend on documentation, region and other terms, so do not assume a private-sale buyer automatically receives coverage. Check the original receipt and ask Valve Support about the circumstances. The Valve Hardware Warranty sets out the relevant terms.

A private sale and a Valve-certified refurbished Deck do not offer the same assurance. Valve says each certified-refurbished unit receives a factory reset and software update, then undergoes more than 100 tests at a Valve facility. The described checks include controller inputs, audio, screen, internals and battery health. Valve also says these units receive the same one-year warranty as a new Deck unless a longer period applies in the buyer’s country. See Valve’s Certified Refurbished Steam Deck page for current regional availability and terms.
Compare the precise configuration and the whole offer—not just the headline price. Regional certified-refurbished stock and prices change, so check the live local offer before deciding.

| Model and storage | LCD or OLED, and the capacity shown on the device. |
| Screen and refresh rate | Valve lists the LCD at 7 inches, 1280 × 800 and up to 60Hz; the OLED at 7.4 inches, 1280 × 800 HDR and up to 90Hz. These are model specifications, not condition ratings. |
