Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsBefore paying for a used e-reader, verify its exact model and generation, inspect the display and controls, test charging and Wi-Fi, and make sure it can be reset and set up under your account. A quick demonstration can expose obvious faults, but it cannot measure long-term battery capacity or guarantee future software support.
1. Identify the exact model and generation
Start by asking for the full model name and generation—not just “Kindle” or “Kobo.” Features, connectors, and accessory compatibility can change between generations in the same product family. Compare the seller’s description with the manufacturer’s identification guide for that specific device.
- For Kindle, Amazon’s Kindle E-Reader identification guide lists generations, release years, ports, and features.
- For Kobo, check the model guide for features such as stylus compatibility and audiobook support.
Confirm any feature you actually need: screen size, storage, physical page-turn buttons, frontlight or warm light, waterproofing, stylus support, or audiobook playback. A family name alone does not confirm that a particular used unit has the feature.
2. Inspect the screen and test the controls
Turn the reader on and view a bright, readable page. Check the whole display for cracks, lines, blotches, pressure damage, stuck pixels, or ghost images that persist when you change pages. Open menus and turn several pages to look for touchscreen dead zones. If the model has physical page-turn buttons or screen rotation, test those too.
#1 Best Overall
Kobo’s troubleshooting guide includes a path for screen problems, and Kobo lists display replacement among repairs for selected readers. These are practical checks, not a formal manufacturer inspection checklist.
3. Test power, charging, and the port
Ask the seller to show that the e-reader powers on, accepts a charge, and stays on during your inspection. Look for a loose or visibly damaged charging port. If it does not charge, try a known-good cable and power source before concluding that the reader itself is faulty. Kobo also recommends trying a different cable or port in its troubleshooting guidance.

A short handoff is not a battery-capacity test. A reader that powers on and continues running during a brief demonstration may still have a worn battery; there is no reliable battery-health percentage or pass/fail threshold established here. Kobo says battery replacement is available for selected models, not every e-reader.
4. Check the functions you plan to use
During the demonstration, test the power button, touchscreen, page-turn buttons if present, and light adjustment. Connect to Wi-Fi and, if practical, connect to a computer over USB. Confirm required functions against the exact model guide rather than assuming that every reader in a product family supports them. Kobo’s troubleshooting materials cover screen, Wi-Fi, account, and battery issues.
5. Reset it and confirm you can set it up
Ask the seller to factory-reset the device before handoff. The reset erases locally stored books and other personal data, so the seller should back up anything they want to keep. If practical, complete setup yourself: connect to Wi-Fi and check that the device is no longer tied to the previous owner’s account.
- Kindle: After the seller backs up anything they need, use the device’s factory-reset option. Amazon says a completed reset removes personal and downloaded data and deregisters the Kindle from the Amazon account. See Amazon’s factory-reset instructions.
- Kobo: A factory reset removes local books, signs the user out, resets settings, and requires setup and sync afterward. Follow the instructions for the particular model in Kobo’s reset guide.
If the seller cannot remove their account or you cannot complete setup, pause the purchase until the issue is resolved. A device that has not been reset may still contain the previous owner’s data or be inconvenient to use.

- Lightweight and portable, with thoughtful corner protectors, only suitable for the model marked in the title, not for other models, made of silicone material
6. Check repair options for that model
Do not infer repairability from the brand. Kobo currently identifies the Libra Colour, Clara Colour, and Clara BW as e-readers designed for repair, with display, battery, motherboard, and housing parts listed. Its repair information is model-specific; check the current details for your model and region because parts availability can change.
Kobo warns that opening a waterproof device can compromise its waterproofing. It also cautions that incorrect VCOM values during display or motherboard repair can damage the e-reader. If repairability matters to your decision, check the actual parts and repair guidance before buying rather than treating a repair listing as a guarantee that a repair will be easy or economical.

7. Compare the whole deal, not just the asking price
Compare two used readers against the same needs and costs. A lower-priced device may be a poor fit if it lacks a required feature, needs a compatible accessory, or has no practical repair option. Check the seller’s return terms and compare the total with a comparable new or refurbished reader available in your region.
| What to compare | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Screen | Size and type you want; visible condition across the full display. |
| Features | Required warm light, page buttons, waterproofing, stylus support, or audiobook playback on the exact model. |
| Charging | Connector type for that generation and condition of the port; include a compatible cable if needed. |
| Setup | Reset completed, Wi-Fi connection works, and setup is possible under your account. |
| Repair | Model-specific repair guidance and parts availability in your region. |
| Total cost | Asking price, compatible case or cable, return terms, and the cost of a comparable new or refurbished option. |
There is no universal market-price benchmark or cross-brand support ranking established here, so compare current options for your location and the exact model rather than relying on a general rule.
