Before paying for a used Android TV box, verify that the exact device is Play Protect certified, check its software and update status, confirm your streaming services work on that model in your region, and test the hardware. A Play Store icon or the word “Android” on a listing is not proof that the box is an officially supported Android TV device.
1. Check Play Protect certification on the box
With the seller’s permission, open the Google Play Store on the device and go to profile icon > Settings > About. Look for the Play Protect certification status. Google says certified devices have passed Android compatibility testing; for an uncertified device, Google has no record of those test results. Google lists possible consequences such as update, app, and security limitations. See Google’s certification guidance.
Certification is not the same as the Play Protect app-scanning feature. Scanning checks apps from Google Play and other sources and may warn about, disable, or remove harmful apps. Keep it enabled, but do not treat it as proof that the device itself is certified. Google explains Play Protect.
2. Confirm it is an official Android TV device
A box can run Android-based software and include a Play Store without being an officially certified Android TV device. Google has warned that some boxes built with Android Open Source Project software are marketed to look like Android TV devices and may include Google apps or the Play Store without a Google license. In a 2023 Android TV Community post, Google employee Ward H. said some such devices “may also come with Google apps and the Play Store that are not licensed by Google, which means that these devices are not Play Protect certified.” Read the Google Community post.

Check the exact model against Google’s Android TV partner information and compare that with the certification status shown on the box. Match the model number on the device itself, not just the seller’s title or packaging.
3. Review software, updates, and signs of modification
Ask the seller to show the installed system version and whether an update is available. Google recommends checking for and installing system updates. Then look up the exact model on the manufacturer’s support pages to establish what support and update commitment—if any—still applies in your country.

An uncertified status can have several causes. Google identifies an unlocked bootloader, a modified Android operating system, and rooting as common reasons. Its suggested recovery path may include updating Android, a factory reset, and restoring the factory state with the original manufacturer-signed build. A factory reset alone is not proof that modified firmware has been replaced. If the seller cannot explain a certification failure or refuses to show the status, treat that as a reason to walk away or contact the manufacturer for model-specific guidance. Do not rely on unofficial firmware as a purchase-day fix. Google’s certification page describes these causes and recovery steps.
4. Confirm the streaming apps and video quality you need
Make a short list of the services you actually use, then verify support for the exact box and your region with each service. Widevine is Google’s content-protection system for premium media, and Android TV is a supported platform, but that does not establish that a particular used box has the necessary DRM provisioning, supports the desired app, or will play at the resolution you expect. Google’s Widevine overview describes the platform; it does not certify an individual listing.

Ask the seller to open the relevant apps and, if possible, play a title on the same network and display you intend to use. Check the playback quality in the service itself where available. An app being installed—or visible in the Play Store—does not by itself prove that the account, region, DRM configuration, or desired resolution will work.
5. Test the physical device before handing over payment
If you can inspect it in person, test the actual unit rather than relying on photos. These are practical buyer checks, not a Google-prescribed hardware test:

- Inspect the case and ports for damage, looseness, or signs of overheating.
- Check that the remote and power supply are included and work; confirm any missing accessories can be replaced.
- Connect it to a display and test HDMI picture and sound.
- Try the remote’s navigation, back, home, and volume controls.
- Connect to Wi-Fi or Ethernet, as applicable, and open the apps you intend to use.
If the seller will not let you start the box or demonstrate its core functions, factor that uncertainty into your decision rather than assuming the device works.

When comparing more than one box, use the exact model and market—not broad claims such as “4K Android” or “comes with Play Store.” Verify each point with the manufacturer or service provider where appropriate.
