Before buying a USB-C hub, check that your laptop’s specific port supports the features you need—not just that the plug fits. Confirm USB data, video output, and USB Power Delivery charging separately, then match those capabilities to the hub’s display outputs, ports, power budget, and cable.
1. Check what your laptop’s USB-C port supports
USB-C describes a connector, not a guaranteed set of features. A USB-C port may support data without supporting video output or laptop charging. Look up your exact laptop model and port in its manufacturer’s specifications or manual, and confirm each capability individually.
- USB data: Check the stated standard and speed, especially if you plan to connect an external SSD or other high-bandwidth device.
- Video: Confirm support for DisplayPort Alternate Mode, USB4 display tunneling, or Thunderbolt video, as applicable to the laptop and hub.
- Charging input: Confirm that the port accepts USB Power Delivery (USB PD) if you want the hub to charge the laptop.
- Operating system: Check the hub’s compatibility notes and any stated driver requirements for your laptop’s operating system.
Microsoft treats USB data, USB PD power-sink support, and DisplayPort Alternate Mode as separate host-side capabilities in its Windows docking recommendations. Those recommendations are platform guidance, not a guarantee for every laptop or operating system.
2. Match the hub’s video support to your monitors
Write down each monitor’s resolution and refresh rate, then verify the complete path: laptop video capability, host connection, hub output, and the hub’s supported display configuration. An HDMI or DisplayPort socket on a hub does not by itself mean your laptop can send video through it, or that it will support your monitor’s preferred resolution and refresh rate.

For multiple displays or high-refresh monitors, look for explicit support for the exact number of screens and resolution/refresh combinations you intend to use. Microsoft’s wired-dock design guidance recommends at least HDMI 1.4 or DisplayPort 1.2 and 1080p as a baseline; these are recommendations for that guidance, not a promise that an arbitrary hub supports a newer monitor’s highest mode. See Microsoft’s docking guidance.
USB4 supports compatibility with USB 3.2, USB 2.0, and Thunderbolt 3 hosts and devices, with the connection scaling to the best mutual capability, according to the USB Implementers Forum. However, USB4 shares bandwidth among data and display traffic. Microsoft explains that bandwidth is allocated across USB 3.x, PCIe, and DisplayPort; if enough bandwidth is unavailable, display capability may be reduced or a display tunnel may fail. See Microsoft’s USB4 overview.

3. Confirm laptop charging and the hub’s power budget
If you want one hub cable to replace your laptop charger, check that the laptop accepts USB-C Power Delivery and compare its required input with the hub’s stated host charging output. Also confirm whether the hub needs an external USB-C charger and whether that adapter is included.
USB PD Revision 3.1 allows up to 240 W over a full-featured USB Type-C cable and connector, according to the USB-IF. That is a standard capability ceiling—not evidence that a particular laptop, hub, adapter, or cable supports 240 W. Use the specifications for the exact products in your setup.

Distinguish the hub’s host charging output from the external adapter’s total rating. The adapter must also power the hub and any attached devices. Microsoft’s wired-dock guidance recommends budgeting at least 30 W for the upstream host and gives separate examples for downstream USB-A and USB-C devices. It also notes that a dock may reduce host charging or stop it when the total budget is exceeded. These are design recommendations, so check the hub’s own power specifications for its actual limits. See Microsoft’s docking guidance.
4. Count the ports and check what each one does
List the devices you expect to leave connected—such as storage, keyboard and mouse receivers, a webcam, Ethernet, a card reader, audio equipment, displays, and a phone. Then compare that list with the hub’s port count and specifications.

- Check the number and type of USB-A, USB-C, Ethernet, audio, and display connections.
- For each USB-C port, check whether it supports data, charging, video, or host input; ports on the same hub may have different functions or speeds.
- Check the data rate of downstream ports if you use fast storage or other bandwidth-sensitive devices.
- Review how much power the hub can provide to attached devices, not only to the laptop.
Microsoft’s docking guidance describes allocating a dock’s total power budget between the host and connected devices. Treat its examples as design guidance and rely on the specific hub’s documented port and power limits when comparing products. See Microsoft’s docking guidance.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.5. Check the cable and the hub’s physical fit
If the hub has a captive host cable, check its length and whether it reaches comfortably from the laptop’s port. If it uses a separate USB-C cable, verify that cable’s data and power ratings match the hub and laptop requirements. USB-IF says USB-C to USB-C cables in its certification program carry a 60 W or 240 W power logo; cables other than USB 2.0 High-Speed are also marked with an appropriate data rate. A power rating alone does not establish support for high-speed data or video. See USB-IF cable compliance guidance.

- 5 in 1 Connectivity: The USB C Multiport Adapter is equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 100W USB C PD port, a 5 Gbps USB A data port, and two 480 Mbps USB A ports
Also consider whether the hub’s size and placement will block neighboring laptop ports, whether it is bus-powered or uses an external adapter, and whether its documented operating-system support fits your setup.
6. Compare candidate hubs against your setup
Use the same checklist for every candidate so that a familiar connector or a long port list does not distract from a missing capability.
| What to compare | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Host compatibility | Your exact laptop port’s data, video, and charging capabilities, plus operating-system support. |
| Video | Supported host protocol, output connectors, number of displays, and documented resolution/refresh combinations. |
| Charging | Maximum host USB PD output, laptop input requirement, required adapter, and power allocation under load. |
| Data | Host link standard and speed, plus the data capability of each downstream port. |
| Ports and power | Required port types and quantities, and power available to attached devices. |
| Practical fit | Cable length, hub size and placement, included adapter, and manufacturer support information. |
There is no universal best hub: compatibility depends on the laptop, monitors, peripherals, and whether you need charging through the hub. Check the documentation for the exact models before buying.
