A compact drone is not automatically a beginner-friendly or low-cost choice: goggles and a controller may be separate or model-specific, and a drone’s advertised flight time may come from controlled test conditions.
1. Match the drone to how and where you’ll fly
Start with the intended use, not the smallest frame or the most impressive product video. Indoor practice, outdoor freestyle, racing and stabilized video place different demands on an aircraft. A camera-focused FPV drone and a racing quad are not interchangeable just because both offer a first-person view.
- Indoor practice: Consider the available space and how you will protect people and property. A small aircraft can still need room to maneuver.
- Outdoor freestyle: Think about the open space available and whether you want an FPV camera-drone experience or an aircraft aimed at agile flight.
- Racing: Confirm that the aircraft and the rest of the setup suit the racing use you have in mind; do not assume a stabilized video drone is a substitute.
- Stabilized footage: Look for a camera-drone system that fits your filming needs rather than choosing on size alone.
There is no evidence here for a universal best small FPV drone or a fair cross-brand ranking. The right choice depends on the use, equipment and rules that apply to you.
2. Check what the full setup includes
An FPV system may involve the aircraft, goggles, a controller, batteries, a charger and other required accessories. Read the exact listing and identify what is included, what is required to operate the drone and what you would need to buy separately. Do not assume equipment from another brand—or even a similarly named accessory—will work. Verify compatibility for the exact aircraft and accessory models.

DJI’s Avata 2 is one manufacturer-documented example, not a recommendation for every buyer. DJI says the drone requires a DJI Goggles series product and either a DJI RC Motion series product or an FPV Remote Controller product to operate. DJI also advertises a package with the drone, Goggles N3 and RC Motion 3; package contents and availability can vary, so check the exact bundle for your region. 3. Check the rules where and how you’ll fly
Rules depend on your country, location, operation and purpose. Check the regulator’s current guidance before buying; a weight threshold is not blanket permission to fly anywhere or in any manner.

United States: recreational flying
For US recreational flying, FAA guidance says drones weighing 250 grams (0.55 pounds) or more must be registered, and recreational flyers must maintain visual line of sight. The FAA also distinguishes the recreational exception from operation under Part 107; which requirements apply depends on the operation. Start with the FAA’s recreational flyer guidance and its Part 107 information, and check airspace restrictions for the intended location. Do not treat a drone under 250 grams as exempt from every restriction.
Travel and other locations
For travel, check destination rules and flight restrictions as well as transportation requirements, registration procedures and local safety practices. DJI gives this advice in its beginner’s guide to Avata 2. Rules can differ between destinations, so do not rely on the rules where you bought the drone.

4. Read flight-time claims with their test conditions
A manufacturer’s maximum flight-time figure is a measurement under specified conditions, not a promise of the duration you will get in every session. Check the manual for the test setup and plan for battery changes and charging rather than assuming one flight will cover your outing.
For the Avata 2, DJI’s manual says its maximum-flight-time test used constant forward flight at 21.6 kph, a windless environment at sea level, camera settings of 1080p/30fps with video mode off, and a battery flown from full to empty. Those conditions describe the measurement; they do not establish how long a varied flight will last. The Avata 2 User Manual also provides model-specific operating information.

5. Budget for batteries, charging and repairs
Compare the cost of a complete usable setup rather than a drone-only price. Include any required goggles and controller, compatible spare batteries and charging equipment, plus likely replacement parts. Current prices and service costs are not established here, so check them for the exact model and region before deciding.
Before buying, verify that replacement propellers and other relevant parts are available for the precise aircraft model, and check whether the manufacturer describes them as user-replaceable or directs owners to service. Accessory names alone do not establish compatibility. DJI describes Avata 2 as having built-in propeller guards; that feature should not be assumed on other drones. There is no established cross-brand comparison here for crash durability or repair prices.

6. Use a final pre-purchase checklist
- Can the aircraft do the kind of flying you intend, in the places you can actually use it?
- Does the listing include the aircraft, compatible goggles and controller, and the required batteries and charger?
- Have you confirmed compatibility by exact model for every accessory you plan to reuse or buy?
- Have you checked the current rules for your country, flight purpose and intended location?
- Have you read the conditions behind the advertised flight-time figure and planned for battery swaps?
- Can you identify compatible replacement parts and understand the available repair or service route?
- Does the total cost cover the whole system and practical battery needs, rather than only the aircraft?
