Before buying a refrigerator on sale, confirm the exact model, make sure it fits both your kitchen and delivery route, compare energy use with similar models, and calculate the full delivered and installed cost. Then read the written warranty and the seller’s return and old-appliance pickup terms. A reduced sticker price alone does not tell you whether the refrigerator is a good deal.
Identify the exact model and the real total price
Write down the refrigerator’s complete model number, not just its brand or product-family name. Models that look alike may differ in dimensions, capacity, features, or energy use, so compare the exact units you could actually buy.
Ask the seller what the displayed sale price includes. Delivery, installation, water-line connection, old-unit haul-away, and financing may affect the total, and terms vary by seller. Compare the final cost for the same services rather than comparing sticker prices alone.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Record the full model number and the sale price.
- Ask which delivery and installation services are included and what each additional service costs.
- Confirm whether financing changes the total amount you will pay.
- Compare like-for-like models and service terms.
Check the fit before you order
Measure the refrigerator space
Measure the opening’s height, width, and depth. Account for the doors’ full swing and the ventilation space the refrigerator needs. The Federal Trade Commission advises shoppers to make sure the appliance space allows full door opening and safe ventilation; use the specific model’s installation guide for its required clearances. See the FTC’s appliance-shopping guidance and the manufacturer’s installation guide for the exact unit.

Measure the delivery route
Check the route from the delivery vehicle to the kitchen, including exterior and interior doors, hallways, stairs, and tight turns. A refrigerator that fits its final opening may still be impossible to maneuver into the room. Confirm any delivery-access requirements with the seller before purchase.
Choose capacity and layout for your household
Buy enough usable space for your household’s needs without paying for substantially more capacity than you will use. ENERGY STAR notes that larger refrigerators generally consume more energy, and top-freezer models tend to use the least energy among common configurations. Door style and layout are tradeoffs: weigh access and organization against your kitchen space and preferences rather than assuming one configuration is best for everyone.
Compare models on capacity and layout alongside their dimensions, energy figures, price, and features. Favor features your household will actually use over a longer list of options.

Compare energy use, not just the efficiency label
Read the EnergyGuide label for each exact model
The yellow EnergyGuide label shows estimated energy use and helps compare similar appliances. Its estimated annual operating cost is based on typical use and a national average energy price; actual costs vary with local electricity rates and how the refrigerator is used. Use the label to compare candidates, not as a promise of your future bill. See the FTC’s explanation of EnergyGuide labels.
Use ENERGY STAR certification as one comparison point
ENERGY STAR says certified refrigerators are about 9 percent more energy efficient than models meeting federal minimum standards. Its consumer refrigerator and refrigerator-freezer eligibility criteria say qualifying models use 10 percent less energy than the federal minimum; that criteria page notes a change effective August 5, 2021. These are program-level comparisons, not a substitute for checking the EnergyGuide figures for the particular models you are considering. Review ENERGY STAR’s refrigerator guidance and its refrigerator eligibility criteria.
If certification or environmental impact matters to you, ENERGY STAR identifies R-600a and R-441A as lower-global-warming-potential refrigerants in its guidance. Check the specific model’s details rather than inferring its refrigerant from the brand or configuration.

Check incentives locally
Ask your utility or local program administrator whether a rebate currently applies to the exact model. ENERGY STAR provides a Rebate Finder; eligibility and availability can vary, so verify the terms before counting an incentive in your budget.
Read the warranty and seller policies before paying
Understand what the written warranty covers
Read the actual warranty for the refrigerator you are buying. Check its duration, exclusions, and whether you or the seller must pay for labor or service. The FTC distinguishes a product’s included warranty from a separately purchased service contract; do not assume an add-on plan replaces or improves the included coverage. See the FTC’s warranty guidance.
Confirm return and repair options
Return terms are seller-specific. For example, Costco’s published policy dated March 3, 2026 specifies a 90-day return period for refrigerators over 10 cubic feet and a second-year warranty obligation. That is Costco’s policy, not a general rule for refrigerator sales; check the current written terms of the retailer you plan to use. See Costco’s published policy.

For the exact model, look for reliable information about repair access and recurring problems before committing. General brand reputation alone does not establish how easy or costly a particular model will be to repair.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Settle delivery, installation, and old-unit pickup details
Get the seller’s service terms in writing before checkout. Confirm the delivery date or window, whether installation is included, whether water-line work is included, and whether the crew will remove packaging or take away your old refrigerator. Ask what conditions could prevent pickup or add a fee.
ENERGY STAR says many appliance retailers pick up and recycle an old refrigerator when delivering a new one, but this is not guaranteed for every purchase. Ask your seller whether pickup and recycling are available, what they cost, and what preparation is required.
Make the final comparison
When two sale refrigerators are close in price, compare the factors that affect the whole purchase—not just the discount shown on the tag:
- Exact model and total cost, including services you need.
- Fit in the kitchen and feasibility of the delivery route.
- Capacity, storage layout, and door configuration.
- EnergyGuide consumption and estimated annual cost for similar models.
- Warranty coverage, return period, and model-specific repair information.
- Current local rebate eligibility and old-unit pickup or recycling terms.
Choose the model that fits your space and needs at an acceptable total cost, with energy use and seller terms you have verified. The largest discount is not necessarily the best value if the refrigerator does not fit, costs more to install, or comes with less suitable coverage.
