Before buying a racing game for a group, verify the player count for the exact way you plan to play: split-screen on one system, local wireless, or online. Then confirm the platform and edition, controller requirements, difficulty options, race modes, and any internet or subscription requirement. A game advertised as multiplayer may not support your whole group on one screen.
Start with how the group will play
Look for separate player counts for each multiplayer mode. Split-screen uses one system and display; local wireless connects nearby systems; online play connects players over the internet. These counts are not interchangeable, and online or wireless capacity does not tell you how many people can play on one console.
For example, Nintendo lists GRID Autosport for Nintendo Switch for 1–2 players on one system, but 2–8 through local wireless and online. If everyone will share one console, the relevant number is two, not eight.
For each candidate, write down the capacity that matches your plan:

- MULTIPLE WAYS TO PLAY: Gather with friends and play local split-screen in Grand Prix and the new party mode Race Park, compete against a community of players from around the world with up to 12 players online in World Match, or test your driving skills in Time Trials.
- One system: How many players can race together on the same console or computer, and is the view split-screen?
- Local wireless: How many players can connect nearby, and does each need a separate system and copy of the game?
- Online: How many players can join, and are there account, internet, or subscription conditions?
Confirm the exact platform and edition
Features can vary by platform, edition, and region. Check the store page for the system you own rather than relying on a general game description or a listing for another console.
For instance, LEGO says LEGO 2K Drive supports two-player split-screen in Story, Cup Series, and Race modes. Its FAQ lists crossplay on PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PC via Steam or Epic, but not Nintendo Switch. Online play being available across platforms does not mean every platform supports crossplay.
Availability can also differ by region or change over time. The official 4PGP website reports a Nintendo Switch 2 edition and PS5 and Steam launches in 2026; check which edition is actually for sale in your region and whether it has the modes your group wants.

Count controllers before you buy
Check how many compatible controllers multiplayer requires, what controller types the game supports, and how many you already own. Nintendo’s UK listing for 4PGP says multiplayer requires one compatible controller per player. A four-player capacity therefore does not mean four players can use one controller.

Nintendo’s GRID Autosport listing names the Nintendo LABO Toy-Con Car & Pedal, HORI Pro Deluxe, and HORI Pro Mini wheels as supported. The NASCAR Rivals publisher FAQ lists Joy-Con, Pro Controller, and Joy-Con Wheel Pair configurations. Verify the controller list for the exact platform and game before buying extras.
Match difficulty and controls to the group
Mixed-skill groups are more likely to enjoy a session when newer players can get help without making the game feel too simple for experienced racers. Look for difficulty settings, driving assists, tutorials, and control options.

Examples include four difficulty levels, an assist mode, gyroscopic controls, and a tutorial in Nintendo UK’s 4PGP listing. NASCAR Rivals’ FAQ describes adjustable assists and difficulty. GRID Autosport’s Nintendo listing describes customizable controls and difficulty. These are game-specific features, so confirm them in the listing for the version you plan to play.
Check whether the race modes suit your plans
A large group may want quick races that are easy to start, or a longer structure that gives players a reason to keep taking turns. Check the actual modes rather than assuming every racing game includes the same options.

The 4PGP official website lists Championship, Quick Race, and Time Attack, along with 19 cars and 14 circuits. Nintendo’s GRID Autosport listing describes customizable controls and difficulty; it lists the game at 6.6 GB and gives a September 19, 2019 release date. Treat that storage figure and availability as subject to change, and check the current store listing before installing.

For any game, confirm whether the desired mode supports the number of people you have. A title may offer a mode for solo play or online sessions without offering that same mode in split-screen.
Factor in internet and subscription requirements
Separate local play from online play when checking costs and setup. On Xbox, Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled is listed for 2–4 local players with shared or split-screen play. Xbox’s store page says online multiplayer on console requires a separately sold Game Pass Essential, Premium, or Ultimate subscription. Do not assume that a local multiplayer mode has the same requirement as online play.
For online sessions, check whether everyone needs an account, an internet connection, or a console subscription, and whether the online feature is currently available. The NASCAR Rivals FAQ describes local wireless for up to eight players and online lobbies for up to 16; those are publisher-listed capacities, so verify current online service status before planning around them.

Compare candidates against your must-haves
Use a short checklist before choosing. Eliminate any game that fails a hard requirement, such as the right platform or enough players on one system. If several candidates remain, choose based on the group’s preference for arcade, kart, or simulation-style racing; the listed capacities and features do not establish a universal best game.
- Does the exact platform and edition support the planned mode?
- Can the required number of people play in that mode?
- Are enough compatible controllers available?
- Can less experienced players use assists or a tutorial?
- Are the available race formats right for the length and style of the gathering?
- Will online play require internet access, accounts, or a separate subscription?
Buy accessories only after checking compatibility
A racing wheel is optional, not a general requirement for multiplayer. If you want one, confirm that the exact game and platform support it, and first make sure the group has the basic controllers it needs. For example, Nintendo lists the HORI Pro Mini and Pro Deluxe wheels as supported by GRID Autosport on Switch; that does not establish support in other games or on other systems.
