Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Before buying, verify that the exact phone can record your required resolution, frame rate, and Log profile together—in the slow-motion mode and camera lens you plan to use. Separate spec-sheet entries for “4K” and “slow motion” do not prove the phone records 4K slow motion. Then check the codec, storage limits, external-drive requirements, and whether your editing software can handle the files.
Verify that 4K and slow motion work together
Look for the exact recording combination, not a list of features that appear separately. A phone may offer 4K video at one frame rate and slow motion at another resolution. Also check which rear or front camera lens supports the mode, and whether the specification refers to capture in slow motion or merely slowing ordinary footage during editing.
Frame rate, measured in frames per second (fps), is how many images the camera records each second. Higher capture rates can provide more frames to play back slowly, but the resolution and available frame rates depend on the recording mode. Confirm the mode’s recording duration limits and whether stabilization, HDR, or Log remains available at the settings you want.
- Apple lists 4K Dolby Vision recording up to 120 fps and 4K slow motion up to 120 fps for the iPhone 18 Pro’s Fusion Main camera. These are manufacturer specifications, not a cross-brand performance test. Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro technical specifications.
- Google’s Pixel technical specifications list rear-camera 4K recording at 24, 30, or 60 fps and slow motion up to 240 fps as separate features. Those entries alone do not establish that the Pixel records 4K in slow-motion mode. Check the exact model’s modes in Google’s Pixel hardware specifications and Pixel Camera video instructions.
When the spec page is ambiguous, check the manufacturer’s instructions for the camera app or ask support to confirm the precise resolution, fps, lens, and mode combination. A marketing phrase such as “4K video” is not enough to settle the question.

Check where Log is available and what it records
Log is a relatively flat video profile designed to preserve flexibility for color correction in editing. The uncorrected image can look dull or low-contrast; it is not necessarily meant to be the finished look straight from the camera. Confirm that Log is selectable in the specific resolution, frame rate, slow-motion mode, and lens you intend to use.
Also check the Log profile and codec. A codec is the format used to compress and store video; it affects file compatibility, size, and editing demands. Apple lists Apple Log 2 on the iPhone 18 Pro specifications. Samsung says Galaxy Log footage is saved in HEVC and may look dull until color-corrected. Its available controls and settings can vary by phone, software, and carrier. See Apple’s specifications, Samsung’s Log video instructions, and Samsung’s Log Video developer guidance.

Before choosing a phone for Log, make sure the editor you expect to use can import its codec and work with its Log profile. If you do not plan to color-correct footage, a standard video profile may be a more practical choice.
Match storage and external recording to the format
High-quality formats can consume storage quickly, and some combinations depend on the phone’s model and capacity. Check the manufacturer’s model-by-model recording matrix rather than assuming every storage size supports every format.

For example, Apple’s ProRes support information lists 4K at 120 fps recording on supported iPhone 16 Pro and 17 Pro models with external storage. For that specified external-drive use, Apple requires a drive with at least 440 MB/s write speed and a maximum power draw of 4.5 W. These requirements apply to the listed configurations, not to every phone or every recording format. Consult Apple’s ProRes support information and Apple’s ProRes recording instructions for the supported model and storage combinations.
External recording means saving the video directly to a compatible drive connected to the phone instead of relying only on internal storage. If the mode you want requires or supports this, match the drive’s sustained write speed, power needs, connection, and compatibility to the phone maker’s current guidance. A compatible external SSD for phone video is useful only if it meets those requirements; compatibility is not universal.

Compare the rest of the recording workflow
Once the core recording modes check out, compare the factors that affect the footage you actually plan to make. For action or sports, prioritize autofocus behavior, stabilization, rolling-shutter behavior, audio, and sustained recording. For indoor or evening scenes, look for model-specific evidence about low-light video rather than relying on still-photo claims.

- Lens and stabilization: Check which lenses offer the desired mode and whether stabilization changes or is disabled at high frame rates.
- Light and image quality: High-frame-rate capture may have different light requirements from ordinary video. Look for credible testing of the exact model and mode.
- Heat and recording duration: Find model-specific information about sustained recording and any time limits. The cited manufacturer specifications do not provide a controlled cross-brand comparison of heat or sustained performance.
- Audio: Check whether the phone records audio in the selected slow-motion mode and whether its built-in microphones or external audio options fit your use.
- Editing: Confirm that your software supports the recorded codec and Log profile, and that your computer or tablet can handle the files.
A practical checklist before you buy
- Open the manufacturer’s specification page for the exact model and regional variant you plan to buy.
- Confirm the actual slow-motion resolution and fps. Do not infer 4K slow motion from separate 4K and slow-motion listings.
- Verify the supported lens, recording duration, stabilization behavior, and whether the mode is standard, HDR, or Log.
- Check whether Log is available in that exact mode, and note the profile and codec the phone records.
- Estimate storage for your intended recording length and format. Check capacity restrictions and any external-drive requirements, including interface, write speed, and power.
- Confirm that your editing app can read and color-correct the files. Decide whether you want the extra work of grading Log footage.
- For demanding action or long shoots, consult credible, model-specific tests for autofocus, stabilization, rolling shutter, low-light performance, audio, heat, and sustained recording.
