Before checking out, work out the phone’s full cost, confirm the exact model will work with your carrier, verify whether it is locked, and read the return and promotion terms for that specific purchase. A launch-day discount may depend on a qualifying plan, trade-in, financing agreement, or bill credits, so the headline price alone may not tell you what you will pay—or what happens if you return the phone.
The policies below are U.S.-oriented where noted. Offers and terms vary by seller, carrier, device, and purchase route; no particular launch-day offer or phone is covered here.
1. Calculate what the offer will really cost
Compare the amount due at checkout with the total you would owe over the full payment period. Include the service plan if the discount requires one, and distinguish an immediate discount from credits applied to future bills.
- At checkout: Check the phone’s down payment, sales tax, activation fee, and any deposit shown in the order summary.
- Over time: Add recurring device payments and any required service-plan charges for as long as the offer requires you to keep the plan.
- Credits: Find out the amount, timing, and duration of bill credits, and what happens to them if you change plans, leave the carrier, or pay off the device early.
- Trade-in: Count a trade-in credit only after confirming the eligible model, condition rules, and how and when the value is delivered.
Verizon says promotion requirements vary; some bill credits are spread across bills or depend on keeping a qualifying plan and payment agreement. Treat future credits as conditional, not as an instant reduction in the checkout price.

2. Compare offers on the terms that change the deal
If you are choosing between launch-day offers, compare the conditions alongside the advertised price. A lower headline figure may require a plan, trade-in, or longer commitment that does not suit you.

3. Check compatibility for the exact phone variant
Confirm the model number or variant—not just the phone’s marketing name—with the carrier you plan to use. Network compatibility depends on the device and network; an unlocked phone is not automatically compatible with every carrier frequency or feature.

- Identify the exact model and variant in the listing or order details.
- Use the carrier’s device eligibility checker and compare the phone’s supported frequencies with the carrier’s requirements.
- If you are bringing the phone to T-Mobile, follow its BYOD guidance: compatibility and performance can vary for non-T-Mobile devices, and the device must be unlocked to work on its network.
Do not assume a model sold for one carrier or region supports every feature on another carrier’s network.
4. Confirm whether the phone is locked
Check the lock status for the specific phone and purchase route. Financing through a carrier can affect when a phone may be used on another network. Apple’s U.S. iPhone Shopping Help says an iPhone financed through the AT&T Installment Plan, T-Mobile Equipment Installment Plan, or Verizon Device Payment Program remains locked to that carrier until paid in full. That guidance applies to the listed financing arrangements; check the seller’s and carrier’s terms for your order rather than treating it as a universal rule.

5. Read the trade-in terms before sending your old phone
Before handing over or mailing a trade-in, confirm which devices and conditions qualify, whether an account or plan is required, and when the credit begins. Also check whether the credit is an upfront deposit, a refund, or recurring bill credits; those arrangements can have different consequences if you cancel or return the new phone.
For some U.S. Google Store purchase flows, trade-in value may be delivered as a deposit or refund. Google also warns that returning a new phone can cause the buyer to lose a carrier promotion. Read the terms for the actual order before relying on a trade-in value or promotional credit.

6. Check the return deadline and what a return changes
Return windows depend on the seller and how the phone is activated or financed. Google Store’s U.S. carrier-activation guidance gives different windows for Verizon and AT&T orders, while Motorola publishes separate terms for phones bought directly from Motorola. These are transaction-specific policies, not a general return period for new phones.

- Check how the deadline is calculated and whether the phone must be received or merely shipped by then.
- Look for restocking, condition, activation, or packaging requirements.
- Confirm what happens to trade-in value, bill credits, device financing, and service charges if you return the phone.
7. Review checkout and fulfillment before placing the order
Read the complete order summary, not only the discount banner. In Google Store’s U.S. carrier-activation examples, checkout can include a down payment, sales tax, activation fee, monthly device amount, and service charges. Check the actual figures shown for your order and distinguish device costs from ongoing service costs.
