Before buying a Steam game, check the game’s own Store page for supported operating systems and hardware requirements, then confirm its refund conditions and any Steam Deck compatibility notes. A Steam Deck rating is not a substitute for checking whether the game meets your desktop PC’s requirements.
Will this game run on my PC?
Open the game’s Steam Store page and find System Requirements. Compare the listed operating systems and hardware with the computer you intend to use. Steam Support recommends checking both: an operating system being supported does not mean the PC meets the game’s processor, memory, graphics, or other hardware requirements. - Check that your operating system is listed as supported.
- Compare your PC’s components with the game’s minimum and recommended requirements, where provided.
- If you use more than one computer, compare the requirements with the machine you will actually play on.
Requirements and compatibility can change. Check the listing for the particular game rather than assuming that another title from the same publisher or series will work on your PC.
What does buying a game on Steam involve?
A Steam purchase is a license to use digital content, not ownership of a physical copy. Valve’s Steam Subscriber Agreement says, “Steam and your Subscription(s) require the download and installation of Content and Services onto your computer.” The agreement also requires a Steam account and says the Steam client and an internet connection may be required; requirements can change over time.

Do not assume a specific game will work offline just because it is on Steam. Check the game’s Store page and its own instructions for the connectivity and client requirements relevant to how you plan to play.
Can I get a refund if the game doesn’t work?
Under Steam’s standard policy for games and software, you can request a refund within 14 days of purchase if you have played for less than two hours. These are conditions for the standard refund process, not an unconditional guarantee. Valve says it will consider requests outside the standard conditions, but approval is not assured. Some jurisdictions may also give buyers additional rights. Check the current Steam Refunds policy for the applicable terms.

If you are still deciding whether the game suits your system or play style, keep track of both the time since purchase and your in-game playtime. The standard conditions are tied to those limits.
What changes for preorders and Early Access?
For an unreleased preorder, Steam says you can request a refund before the game is released. The standard 14-day and under-two-hour period begins on release. If you play an Early Access or Advance Access version, that playtime counts toward the two-hour limit, and the playtime condition may apply immediately. Check Steam’s refund policy before spending time with an early version.

Does the game work on Steam Deck?
Check the separate compatibility information on the Store page if you plan to play on a Steam Deck. Valve uses four categories:
- Verified: Valve considers the game to work great by default on Deck.
- Playable: The game works, but may require some user configuration.
- Unsupported: Valve’s rating indicates that the game is not supported for Deck play.
- Unknown: Valve has not supplied compatibility information.
Read the detailed notes for a reviewed title, particularly when it is marked Playable. Unknown does not mean a game has been confirmed to work or confirmed not to work; it means Valve has not provided a rating. The review process is ongoing, so status can change. Deck compatibility answers a different question from desktop system requirements. For a regular PC, use the operating-system and hardware requirements on the game’s Store page.

Steam’s refund process does not cover purchases made outside Steam, including third-party CD keys and Steam Wallet cards. If you buy from another seller, check that seller’s refund terms; Valve says it cannot provide a Steam refund for those purchases. The official Steam refund policy describes the distinction.

- Open the game’s Steam Store page and check its supported operating systems.
- Compare your intended PC’s hardware with the listed system requirements.
- Check the game’s client and connectivity expectations if they matter to your setup.

- If playing on Deck, check its rating and the detailed compatibility notes.
