Before buying a Nintendo console or game as a gift, confirm what system the recipient owns or will receive, whether the game supports that system and play style, and whether the gift format suits their Nintendo Account and region. Nintendo eShop does not let you send a game directly as a gift; a prepaid eShop Card or an authorized retailer’s download code for a select game are alternatives.

Start with the recipient’s console

Ask whether they have a Nintendo Switch, Switch Lite, or Nintendo Switch 2—or whether you are giving them a console too. Nintendo Switch 2 plays compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch games, but Nintendo cautions that some titles may not be supported or fully compatible. Check the exact game in Nintendo’s current Switch and Switch 2 compatibility guidance before purchasing.

If the recipient already owns Switch games or accessories, check those specific items as well. Compatibility varies, and a game library or accessory that works with one Switch setup should not automatically be assumed to work fully with Switch 2 or its controllers. Nintendo describes the relevant hardware and accessory considerations in its Switch game compatibility guidance for Switch 2.

Check the way they play

For someone with a Switch Lite, verify that the game supports handheld mode. Lite is designed for handheld play, so this is a practical compatibility check even when a game is labeled for Nintendo Switch. Nintendo’s guide to shopping for digital games identifies handheld-mode support as the condition to check for Lite.

#1 Best Overall
Nintendo Switch 2 System
  • The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
  • One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
  • Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
  • Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
  • GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play

If you are giving a console rather than a game, consider whether the recipient wants handheld play, TV play, or both. That preference can matter as much as the game itself; do not assume the recipient’s current setup or favorite way to play.

Choose a gift format that can actually be given

Nintendo’s answer to “Can I Send a Gift Through Nintendo eShop?” is: “No. It is not possible to send a gift in the Nintendo eShop (on-device or off-device).” Nintendo suggests a prepaid Nintendo eShop Card or a download code for a select game bought through an authorized retailer. See Nintendo’s eShop gifting guidance.

Nintendo Switch with Neon Blue and Neon Red Joy-Con - Handheld Gaming Console
  • 6.2” LCD screen
  • Three play modes: TV, tabletop, and handheld
  • Local co-op, online, and local wireless multiplayer
  • Detachable Joy-Con controllers
  • Nintendo Switch is the home of Mario & friends
  • Specific game: A physical game or an eligible retailer download code can work when you know the recipient’s console, game preference, and region. Check that the code is from an authorized seller and can be redeemed in the recipient’s region.
  • Flexible digital gift: An eShop Card lets the recipient choose a digital purchase. Check the card’s regional redemption terms before buying.
  • Game bought on your account: Avoid assuming that a digital purchase on your Nintendo Account becomes a transferable present. Nintendo ties digital purchases to accounts; virtual game cards have account and console conditions. Review Nintendo’s digital purchase guidance before relying on account sharing as a gifting method.

Not every title is necessarily available as a physical copy or retailer code in every market. Confirm the format and redemption terms for the particular game rather than assuming universal availability.

For a child, check ratings and online features

Use the age-rating organization for the recipient’s region, and consider the game’s content and communication features alongside its age label. Nintendo parental controls can restrict software by rating and restrict communication features. Its smart-device app also supports play-time limits and activity review. Nintendo Account settings can be used to restrict eShop purchases. Details are in Nintendo’s parental controls overview and FAQ.

Use this quick decision checklist

  1. Identify the system: Ask which console the recipient owns or will receive: Switch, Switch Lite, or Switch 2.
  2. Verify the exact title: Check Nintendo’s compatibility information for Switch 2, and check handheld-mode support for Switch Lite.
  3. Match the play style: Decide whether handheld play, TV play, or both matter for the recipient and the console being gifted.
  4. Match the gift to their interests: Choose a known favorite when you know their tastes; consider an eShop Card when you do not.
  5. Check content and communication: For a child, consult the local age rating and consider multiplayer or communication features and the family’s preferences.
  6. Confirm format and region: Check whether the game is available in the format you plan to give, that any retailer is authorized, and that a card or code can be redeemed in the recipient’s region.
  7. For a console gift, check the setup: Consider existing games and accessories as well as whether handheld or TV play matters.
