Before buying a mechanics tool set, match its actual contents to the work you plan to do. Check the socket sizes, SAE and metric coverage, drive sizes, socket depths and access tools—not just the piece count. A large set can still omit a size or tool you need, while a smaller one may cover your regular jobs.
Start with the jobs you expect to do
Write down the fasteners and tasks you commonly handle, then use that list to evaluate each set. For vehicle work, the useful inventory depends on the vehicle and repair; a set’s headline piece count does not show whether it includes the sizes, drive configuration or access tools your jobs require.
For each likely fastener, confirm the size and whether it is SAE or metric. If you work on equipment that uses both systems, check coverage in both rather than assuming a set labeled “mechanics” includes a balanced assortment. Lowe’s mechanics tool set buying guide describes sets as a starting point for DIY auto repair and recommends considering both SAE and metric sockets.
Compare drive sizes and ratchets
Drive size affects which sockets fit the ratchet and helps determine the set’s range of use. Some sets focus on one drive size; others combine 1/4-, 3/8- and 1/2-inch drives. Compare the included ratchets and sockets by drive, and consider whether the configuration suits the fasteners and access you expect. There is no single drive arrangement that fits every buyer.

Tooth count is one feature to consider when the ratchet has limited room to swing. Lowe’s suggests looking for ratchets with 72 teeth or more. The examples below include both 72- and 90-tooth ratchets, but tooth count alone is not an overall quality score or proof of better performance.
Check socket sizes, points and depths
Look beyond the number of sockets. Check the listed sizes, whether they are 6-point or 12-point, and whether the set includes shallow, deep or both types. Deep sockets may be useful when a fastener or stud needs extra clearance; shallow sockets may suit other tasks. A set that has many sockets can still leave a gap in the sizes or types you need.

One example of why the inventory matters more than the headline count is Lowe’s CRAFTSMAN 206-piece listing: it describes sockets across three drive sizes, both 6-point and 12-point types, and shallow and deep options, along with other tools. Its size ranges differ by drive and socket type, so buyers should inspect the detailed list rather than infer coverage from “206-piece.” See the CRAFTSMAN 206-piece listing for its stated inventory.
GEARWRENCH says the off-corner loading design in its 80706 set puts force on the flats of fasteners to improve durability and reduce rounding. That is the manufacturer’s design claim, not independent comparative test evidence. The set is described as 1/2-inch-drive, 6-point SAE, with sockets from 7/16 inch through 1-1/8 inch. Details are on the GEARWRENCH 80706 product page.

Assess access tools and useful extras
Extensions, adapters and universal joints can help reach fasteners that a straight ratchet cannot. Check whether the set includes them, and whether the included types and drive sizes match the sockets you plan to use. Also check for supplementary tools such as combination wrenches, spark plug sockets, hex keys, Torx or other specialty bits, pliers and screwdrivers. These can broaden a set’s usefulness, but extras add value only if they suit your work.
For example, Lowe’s CRAFTSMAN 206-piece listing includes two spark plug sockets, extensions, combination wrenches, hex keys, a universal joint and specialty bits. GEARWRENCH’s 80948 set-contents PDF lists 1/4- and 3/8-inch 90-tooth ratchets, extensions, adapters, universal joints, and SAE and metric shallow and deep sockets. Its manufacturer notes that specifications may change without notice, so confirm current contents in the 80948 set-contents PDF.

Other set inventories illustrate different combinations: the Lowe’s Kobalt 55-piece listing describes a 3/8-inch-drive set with 50 deep and shallow SAE and metric sockets, a 90-tooth ratchet, two extensions and 6-point sockets. GEARWRENCH’s GW72SCBMTS contents PDF lists 1/4- and 3/8-inch 72-tooth quick-release ratchets, SAE and metric sockets, combination wrenches, extensions, adapters and insert bits.
Choose storage that works for you
Consider how you will store and transport the tools. Lowe’s recommends considering a hard case for protection and transport. Product listings also use formats such as blow-mold cases and plastic trays. Check whether the layout keeps tools organized and whether you can return each piece to its place; a case is less useful if the contents are difficult to identify or secure.

The GEARWRENCH 80706 page describes a blow-mold case. Lowe’s CRAFTSMAN CMMT45939 listing describes wrenches and specialty bits in plastic trays. Those are product-specific details, not a guarantee about other sets. Review the exact listing and current packaging information before purchasing.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Verify warranty and standards for the exact model
Read the warranty terms for the specific set and the market where you are buying it. A claim for one product does not establish the terms for a brand’s entire range. The GEARWRENCH 80706 page says the company offers a full lifetime warranty on Mechanics Hand Tools; Lowe’s CRAFTSMAN CMMT45939 listing makes a full lifetime warranty claim for that product. Check the current terms on the CRAFTSMAN CMMT45939 listing and the manufacturer’s page for the exact GEARWRENCH model.
The 80706 product page also says the set meets or exceeds ASME specifications. Treat standards language as a model-specific statement and verify it in the manufacturer’s current documentation; do not assume it applies to another set by the same brand.
A practical comparison checklist
- Job coverage: Do the listed socket sizes match the fasteners and tasks you expect? Are they SAE, metric or both?
- Drives: Which drive sizes are included, and are there ratchets for the sockets in each drive?
- Ratchets: What is the tooth count, and does the design suit the working space you anticipate?
- Sockets: Which sizes are present, and are they 6-point or 12-point, shallow or deep?
- Access: Are extensions, adapters or universal joints included where you need them?
- Extras: Would the included wrenches, spark plug sockets, hex keys, bits or other tools replace something you would otherwise buy?
- Storage: Is the case or tray convenient for your workspace, transport and organization needs?
- Terms: Have you checked the current warranty and any standards claim for the exact model?
Set contents, specifications and warranty language can change. Use the current manufacturer documentation and retailer listing to confirm model-specific details before buying.
