Before buying a laptop for local AI development, choose the models, context lengths, runtimes, and coding tools you expect to use—then verify that the laptop’s memory and accelerator support those exact workloads. There is no universal VRAM minimum: model weights are only part of memory use, and longer context can raise requirements substantially.
Start with the workload, not the “AI PC” label
Write down the models you want to run, the context lengths you need, and the software stack you plan to use. Include whether you will run inference, use coding agents, experiment with model development, or keep other memory-intensive applications open. A laptop’s marketing label or GPU tier does not establish that a particular model and context will fit.
- Model: Identify the specific model or model family, not just a parameter-count target.
- Context: Note the context length you expect to use. Longer context can consume considerably more memory.
- Runtime and framework: List the applications and acceleration backends you actually intend to use.
- Work pattern: Consider whether you need portable development, prolonged GPU work, or several tools running together.
Parameter count alone is not enough to predict whether a workload will fit. Memory is also used by context and runtime allocations, so leave headroom rather than matching a laptop’s stated memory exactly to model weights.
How much VRAM do you need to run local models?
There is no single amount that works for every local model. Match dedicated VRAM—or Apple Silicon unified memory—to the model, context, runtime, and other allocations in your planned setup. Ollama’s examples illustrate why a context setting belongs in any memory estimate:

- STORAGE AND MEMORY - 512 GB PCIe Gen4 NVMe M.2 SSD offers fast speed and efficient storage; and 16 GB DDR5 RAM memory boosts performance with higher bandwidth
- In its January 23, 2026 coding-agent guidance, Ollama says to set context to at least 64,000 tokens and gives
glm-4.7-flashas needing about 23 GB of VRAM at that context. This is a model- and workflow-specific example, not a laptop minimum. Ollama’s coding-agent guidance. - In a September 23, 2025 scheduler example, Ollama reports Gemma 3 12B using 21.4 GiB of VRAM at 128k context with the newer scheduler. That figure is tied to the stated model, context, and software conditions; it is not a prediction for every machine. Ollama’s scheduler example.
These two figures are not directly comparable: they cover different models, contexts, and software conditions. Use documentation or measured requirements for the precise model and runtime you plan to use. Check whether reported capacity refers to dedicated VRAM or total system/unified memory, and account for what else the laptop will be doing.
Choose the memory and accelerator path that fits your tools
| Laptop path | What to check | Evidence and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Apple Silicon | Unified-memory capacity and support for your macOS tools or MLX workflow. | Ollama’s March 30, 2026 MLX preview recommends a Mac with more than 32 GB of unified memory for its Qwen3.5 35B-A3B coding workflow. This is not a general minimum for local AI. Ollama’s MLX preview. |
| Discrete-GPU laptop | The exact GPU configuration, dedicated VRAM, operating system, and support in the runtime and framework you plan to use. | Ollama’s model and context examples show why fit should be checked against the workload rather than a GPU tier name. The cited material establishes no universal VRAM minimum or comparison of current laptop GPUs. Ollama’s coding-agent guidance and scheduler example. |
| AMD or Intel graphics using Vulkan | Exact hardware, operating system, runtime version, framework, and model support. | Ollama’s June 5, 2026 release material says Vulkan support broadens acceleration to AMD and Intel devices. That establishes an Ollama path, not equal performance or feature coverage across frameworks and devices. Ollama’s Vulkan release material. |
Verify software compatibility before choosing hardware
A GPU is useful only if the software you intend to run can use it. Check the runtime’s current compatibility information for the exact operating system, accelerator, and device; then check the framework and model support separately. Support in one application does not imply support in every local-AI tool.

- List your required tools. Include the runtime, frameworks, coding tools, and operating system you need.
- Confirm the accelerator path for each tool. Determine whether it uses a GPU backend, a platform-specific path such as MLX, or another supported option.
- Check your specific device and version. Broad support statements do not guarantee that every GPU, model, or software release has the same coverage.
- Recheck official documentation before purchase. Runtime and model support can change; confirm compatibility for the versions you expect to install.
Ollama’s June 11, 2026 article reports an update that was “up to 20% faster” for its described MLX engine. Treat that as a claim about the described update, not a speed forecast for all Apple Silicon laptops or workloads. Ollama’s MLX update.

- Memory: Confirm unified memory or dedicated VRAM, plus system RAM where relevant. Check that your planned model and context fit with room for runtime allocations.
- Storage: Check the capacity and upgrade options for the exact configuration against the models and development files you plan to keep locally. No universal SSD threshold is established here.
- Upgradeability: Confirm what can be upgraded on the exact laptop using manufacturer documentation; do not assume memory or storage can be replaced.
- Sustained operation: Look for product-specific evidence about cooling, noise, and sustained performance for the configuration. The cited sources do not establish laptop thermals, battery life, or a performance ranking.
- Portability: Weigh the machine’s size and power needs against where and how you expect to develop. These are product-specific trade-offs, not conclusions that can be drawn from an “AI PC” label.
A practical pre-purchase checklist
- Write down target models and required context lengths.
- Find model- and runtime-specific memory information; include context and other allocations, not only model weights.
- Identify whether the laptop uses unified memory or a discrete GPU, and verify the capacity of the exact configuration.
- Confirm the operating system, runtime, framework, accelerator backend, and model work together on that hardware.
- Check manufacturer documentation for the exact SKU’s storage, upgrade options, and other specifications that matter to you.
- Use product-specific evidence to evaluate sustained performance, cooling, noise, and battery life; do not infer these from benchmark figures for a different setup.
