Before buying a Japanese visual novel on Steam, check the exact game listing for the text and audio languages you want, its content notice, PC requirements, Steam Deck status, story format, and your region’s current price. The “Japanese visual novel” label does not guarantee Japanese voice acting, English subtitles, or any particular content or device support.
Does it have English subtitles, and is Japanese voice acting included?
Steam’s language table separates interface, full audio, and subtitles. Check the column for each language you care about; support in one column does not imply support in another. Japanese origins, English marketing text, or Japanese voice acting do not establish that a game has English text.

For example, Kinkoi: Golden Loveriche lists English interface and subtitles but not English full audio, alongside Japanese interface, full audio, and subtitles. By contrast, Silverio Ragnarok says English is unsupported and lists Japanese for all three categories. These are title-specific examples, not a guide to every game: inspect the current language table on the page for the edition you intend to buy.
What kind of content does it contain?
Read the game’s mature-content description, not just its genre tags. Steam listings can describe different kinds of material: Kinkoi: Golden Loveriche describes kissing and sexual relationships that are discussed but not shown, and says appearing characters are over 18. YOU and ME and HER: A Love Story identifies mature themes including violence and strong language. Treat these as publisher disclosures and decide whether the details suit your preferences.

Open the listing’s system requirements and supported operating systems, then compare them with your actual computer. Minimum requirements are game-specific and do not guarantee performance on every system.

Check the live page before buying, particularly if you rely on an older operating system, and remember that a store-page requirement is not a promise of compatibility with every configuration or current Steam client.

Is it Steam Deck compatible?
If you plan to play on a Steam Deck, check the listing’s current compatibility label and follow its linked details. The YOU and ME and HER listing captured for this article identifies the game as Unsupported. That is a signal about that title and device, not a conclusion about other visual novels or handheld PCs. Recheck the live status because compatibility information can change.
Does its story format and feature set suit you?
Use the description, feature list, and developer notes to see how the game is presented. Some readers want choices, branching paths, or multiple endings; others prefer a linear or kinetic story. Look for the relevant details rather than assuming all visual novels use the same format. Steam feature labels can also tell you whether the listing identifies features such as achievements or cloud saves.

Steam’s refund policy says games and software are generally eligible for a refund request within 14 days of purchase when played for less than two hours. Steam also says you may submit a request outside those conditions for review, and some consumers may have additional rights under local law.
