Before buying a high-memory AI workstation, start with the models and workloads you need to run, then verify the GPU memory, system RAM, PCIe layout, power, cooling, and storage as one configuration. A large VRAM figure alone does not guarantee that a system can run your workload or that its GPU will fit and operate reliably.
Start with the workload, not the GPU
Local inference, fine-tuning, training, and mixed graphics-and-AI work stress different parts of a workstation. GPU memory can determine whether a model fits on the card, but throughput, system RAM, data movement, storage, and cooling can limit the overall system. NVIDIA positions the RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell Workstation Edition as a single-GPU workstation product for AI development and data-intensive tasks; that makes it a useful example, not a universal buying recommendation. NVIDIA RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell Workstation Edition
- Inference: Check whether your target model and intended workload fit in the available GPU memory, and whether the card can sustain the throughput you need.
- Fine-tuning or training: Account for the model, data, and workload requirements together. Memory needs vary with the model and the way you run the job.
- Mixed graphics and AI: Consider both compute and graphics requirements, along with how many GPUs and other devices the system must support.
How much GPU memory and system RAM do you need?
GPU memory (VRAM) and system RAM are separate pools; one does not substitute directly for the other. VRAM is the GPU’s onboard memory. System RAM can hold models that are streamed into GPU memory and stage data between storage and GPUs, according to NVIDIA’s multi-GPU guidance. NVIDIA’s multi-GPU AI PC guide
The RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell Workstation Edition is specified with 96 GB of ECC GDDR7 GPU memory. That is a product specification for this specific card; it does not establish a universal amount of VRAM for every AI workstation. NVIDIA product specifications

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
System-memory recommendations also depend on the configuration and workload. NVIDIA’s multi-GPU consumer build guide recommends 64 GB of system RAM as a minimum and 128 GB for the guide’s described 100-billion-parameter LLM or fine-tuning workloads. Separately, NVIDIA’s certified server configuration guide recommends system memory of at least twice total GPU memory for its inference and deep-learning server configurations. These are different recommendations for different contexts, not one desktop rule. Consumer build guide; Certified server configuration guide
Before choosing a RAM capacity, check the exact system’s supported memory type, number of slots, maximum capacity, and whether the selected configuration leaves room to upgrade.

Check PCIe lanes and the full device layout
A motherboard’s advertised slot count does not tell you how many lanes each slot actually receives. NVIDIA warns that many consumer boards wire secondary slots at x1 or x4, and that M.2 drives can share lanes with GPU slots. A multi-GPU build should be checked against the motherboard manual and the exact CPU and drive configuration. NVIDIA multi-GPU build guidance
For the RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell Workstation Edition, NVIDIA lists PCIe Gen 5 x16. Confirm that the intended slot on the selected system supports the required generation and electrical lane width; a physically full-length slot may not be wired for x16. NVIDIA’s certified server configuration guidance likewise calls for a GPU slot that meets the specified PCIe speed and lane width and recommends balanced topology in server configurations. - Read the motherboard or OEM system manual for the electrical width and PCIe generation of each slot.
- Check whether installing M.2 drives disables or reduces lanes for GPU slots.
- For multiple GPUs, verify that the actual layout supports the planned cards rather than assuming every slot can run at full width.
Verify GPU power, connectors, and cooling
Match the power supply and chassis to the exact GPU and complete system. The RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell Workstation Edition is listed at 600 W, occupies two slots, uses PCIe Gen 5 x16, and has double-flow-through cooling. Confirm card dimensions, connector requirements, PSU capacity, and the case’s airflow path before ordering. NVIDIA product specifications
Power figures from one build should not be applied to another. As a configuration-specific example, NVIDIA’s multi-GPU guide says a system with two RTX 5090 cards and a Ryzen 9 9950X needs a 1600 W minimum PSU, recommends 1800 W for headroom, and requires a dedicated 12V-2×6 cable for each GPU. Those figures describe that cited example, not a general PSU prescription for workstations. NVIDIA dual-GPU build guidance

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Check the card’s dimensions and slot thickness against the enclosure, and make sure its cooling design has the airflow it needs. A card that fits in a case physically may still be a poor match if nearby cards, panels, or other components obstruct airflow.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Plan local model storage without sacrificing GPU lanes
Local AI workflows can require substantial storage for models and associated data. NVIDIA’s multi-GPU guide favors one high-capacity PCIe Gen 5 NVMe drive for its example build and warns that adding M.2 drives can reduce lane availability for GPUs. Treat that as guidance for the guide’s configuration: check your motherboard’s lane-sharing rules and balance storage capacity against the GPU layout you need. NVIDIA storage and lane guidance

Use certification as a compatibility signal for prebuilts
NVIDIA says certified workstation systems are tested with supported GPUs and validated for performance, reliability, and compatibility with NVIDIA software and services. Its certification directory states: “NVIDIA-Certified systems are tested with each supported NVIDIA GPU to ensure that they can work together to provide the highest level of performance and reliability.” Certification is useful evidence, but it does not replace checking the precise configuration you are buying. NVIDIA-certified systems directory
For a prebuilt workstation, confirm the exact OEM model and selected configuration, including the supported GPU, installed and upgradeable RAM, power supply, cooling, and warranty terms. A system family may have configurations that differ in these details.
Compare complete configurations, not isolated specifications
When choosing between workstation options, compare the parts that determine whether the whole system meets your needs:
- GPU: memory capacity and type, ECC support if specified, workload fit, power draw, connector, dimensions, slot thickness, and cooling.
- Platform: system RAM capacity and upgrade ceiling, PCIe generation and electrical width at the intended slot, and lane sharing with storage.
- Chassis and power: PSU capacity for the actual configuration, required GPU cables, physical clearance, and airflow.
- Storage: capacity and interface for local models and data, plus any effect of M.2 installation on GPU lanes.
- Prebuilt assurance: exact GPU support and configuration details, certification where applicable, and the OEM’s warranty and service terms.
Prices, warranty terms, retail availability, and service vary by region and specific system; verify them against the exact current offer rather than assuming they follow from a GPU specification or certification listing.
