Before buying a Freely box, check that your TV has a free HDMI port, your broadband is reliable enough for streaming, and the particular device offers the apps and features you want. Freely recommends a minimum internet speed of 10 Mbps; an aerial is not needed for its internet-delivered channels.

Will a Freely box work with my TV?

An external Freely streaming device can add Freely to an existing television with an HDMI input. The device connects to the TV by HDMI and to your home internet; the TV itself does not need built-in Wi-Fi. Check that an HDMI port is available and that you have room for the box or puck and its power connection. Freely’s guide to getting Freely describes the external-device route.

Do not assume that a television supports Freely just because it is a smart TV. Freely’s buying guidance says the service is not currently built into Samsung, LG or Sony TV sets, and names Manhattan Aero and Netgem PLEIO as external options. Roku says Freely is available only on certain supported Roku TVs. For a built-in service, verify the exact TV model against current manufacturer or Freely support information rather than relying on the brand alone. Freely’s buying guide · Roku TV information

What broadband speed and connection does Freely need?

Freely recommends a minimum broadband speed of 10 Mbps for viewing. That is a recommendation, not a guarantee that a stream will work smoothly: Wi-Fi coverage, other household internet use and connection stability also matter. Freely recommends Ethernet where available. If you use Wi-Fi, consider the signal where the TV and device will sit, not just the speed beside your router. Because Freely delivers live TV over broadband, it uses your internet connection and counts toward your monthly data allowance. Check your broadband plan’s allowance and terms if it is capped or metered. If broadband is unreliable or limited, aerial-based Freeview may be a better fit for live terrestrial channels.

Do I need an aerial for Freely?

No aerial is required for Freely’s internet-delivered channels. That makes it an option where installing or connecting an aerial is inconvenient, provided the broadband connection is suitable. Freely says an aerial can also be connected on supported setups to add terrestrial channels; Roku likewise describes aerial use as optional for its live-TV input. Confirm the arrangement for the exact TV or device you plan to use. Freely: how to get Freely · Roku TV information

What viewing costs or account steps should I check?

Freely’s service guidance says viewers should check whether they need a TV Licence. Some broadcaster apps, including BBC iPlayer, ITVX and Channel 4, may ask you to create or sign in to a separate free account; the app’s own requirements apply. Freely also says viewing uses your broadband data allowance. Freely support: connecting your TV to the internet or an aerial · Freely: how to get Freely

Quick checks before you order

  • For an external box or puck, confirm your TV has a free HDMI input and space for the device and power connection.
  • For Freely built into a TV, check the exact make and model against current support information; a smart-TV label alone is not enough.
  • Check that broadband at the TV is reliable, with Freely’s 10 Mbps minimum recommendation in mind; use Ethernet if available.
  • Review your broadband data allowance and whether your household needs a TV Licence.
  • Compare the device’s current app and feature list with the channels and services you use, including any subscription requirement.
  • Check the retailer’s current price, stock and return policy for the exact model.
