Before you buy, check whether the game’s themes and play style suit you, whether your computer and operating system meet its listed requirements, what content it discloses, what recent reviews say, whether it is still in Early Access, and what Steam’s refund policy covers. These checks help you judge fit; they cannot guarantee performance or enjoyment.
Check whether the game matches your taste
Dark fantasy can describe very different experiences, from combat-focused action to horror and story-driven games. Read the store description and inspect the tags for clues about themes, camera perspective, combat, difficulty, and the balance between exploration and narrative. Steam says tags can be applied by developers, players, and moderators, and are used for browsing, tag searches, and recommendations; they are useful signals, not a complete or definitive description. When comparing games, note the specific features that matter to you rather than relying on the “dark fantasy” label alone. A game’s store page is the place to verify those details.
Check compatibility with your computer
Open the game’s Steam store page and compare the system requirements for your operating system with your own processor, memory, graphics hardware, and available storage. Confirm that the game supports your platform, too. Requirements may differ between operating systems, and a listed minimum does not promise a particular frame rate or smooth experience.

For examples of the information a store page can provide, see the requirements listed for Blade of Darkness and Lust for Darkness. Treat these as examples of what to inspect, not as recommendations.
Read the content disclosures
Check the mature-content description and relevant tags against your own boundaries. Look for disclosures about violence, blood, gore, sexual content, or nudity. The information is game-specific: for example, Blade of Darkness describes animated violence, blood, and gore, while Lust for Darkness lists sexual content and nudity among its tags. Do not assume one game’s disclosures apply to another.

Look beyond the review percentage
Steam’s review score summarizes the proportion of positive reviews, but factors such as purchase status, off-topic review filtering, and the availability of reviews in your language can affect its calculation and display. Valve explains these factors in its user-review guidance.
Read recent reviews and look for recurring comments about the things you care about: performance, difficulty, controls, or story. A percentage is a starting signal, not a substitute for the details in players’ comments. Reviews and scores can change, so check the live page rather than relying on an old summary.

Find out whether the game is in Early Access
If the game is marked Early Access, read what is playable now, what the developer says remains unfinished, and how development is progressing. Valve’s Early Access guidance puts it plainly: “With Early Access games, you are going to be playing a work-in-progress.” Consider whether the current state is acceptable to you rather than buying solely on the basis of promised future features.
Understand Steam’s refund terms
Steam Support’s common refund guidance says Valve will, on request, refund a title requested within 14 days of purchase and played for less than two hours. You can still submit a request outside those conditions, but it may be reviewed rather than automatically granted. Check the current Steam refund policy and the terms that apply to your purchase; these standard conditions are not a guarantee that every request will be approved.
