Before you pay, confirm the exact phone will work with your carrier, make sure it is not still tied to a previous owner’s account, inspect its condition and repair history, and understand your return and warranty options. A “locked,” “unlocked,” or “refurbished” label alone does not settle whether the phone is compatible, usable, or worth the risk.
Check the network lock and your carrier’s compatibility
A carrier lock restricts which provider can activate a phone; it is not a complete compatibility check. Even an unlocked phone may not support every network band, plan, or eSIM arrangement. Identify the exact model or variant and the carrier that locked it, then ask your intended carrier to confirm that this handset can be activated on the service and plan you want. The FCC Consumer Guide to Cell Phone Unlocking points to separate guidance on unlocking and network compatibility.
Check an iPhone’s lock status
On an iPhone, go to Settings > General > About and find Network Provider Lock. Apple says “No SIM restrictions” means the iPhone is unlocked. If a provider is listed, the phone can be used only with that provider. This is an iPhone-specific status check, not a universal rule for Android or carrier policies in every country. See Apple’s guide to buying a pre-owned iPhone.
Get any unlock promise in writing
Ask whether the phone is already unlocked or whether the seller expects it to be unlocked later. If it is still locked, get the responsible carrier, eligibility requirements, timing, and any remaining payment obligation in writing. Do not pay as though a future unlock is certain unless the terms are clear and you are comfortable with them. As one specific US example, Apple says iPhones financed through the AT&T Installment Plan, T-Mobile Equipment Installment Plan, or Verizon Device Payment Program remain locked to that carrier until paid in full; this does not establish the rules for other plans or devices. See Apple’s US carrier and iPhone purchasing guidance.

Make sure the phone is not tied to its previous owner
A phone can be network-compatible and still be unusable because it remains linked to someone else’s account. Apple’s instruction is direct: “Don’t buy an iPhone if Activation Lock is enabled.” If the seller is with you, ask them to remove the lock before completing the sale. For an online purchase that displays “iPhone Locked to Owner,” Apple says to return it.
Where possible, have the phone start and complete setup before the sale is final. For Android phones, account-protection steps vary by manufacturer and model; consult the official instructions for the exact device rather than assuming the iPhone process applies.

Find out what “refurbished” means for this listing
“Refurbished” is not a uniform condition grade or a guarantee that the phone has been restored to a particular standard. Ask who inspected or refurbished it, what checks and repairs were performed, what parts were replaced, and what the seller’s condition grade means. If you are buying online, look for photos of the actual phone and read the full description for disclosed faults. The FTC’s online shopping guidance cautions that a used or refurbished label does not mean an item is in top condition and recommends reviewing photos and seller terms.
- Ask for the inspection or certification process, not just the word “certified.”
- Confirm whether listing images show the exact device or stock photos.
- Check the description for damage, missing accessories, repaired components, or other limitations.
- Ask the seller to put any promise about repairs, replacements, or condition in writing.
Inspect the phone, battery, and repair history
If you can examine the phone in person, remove its case if possible. Look over the display, edges, back, and charging connector; power it on; and check that it charges. Test the buttons, camera, Wi-Fi, and cellular activation where possible. Apple’s pre-owned iPhone guidance recommends these checks and advises against buying an iPhone that will not charge.

Review iPhone parts and service information
On supported iPhones, open Settings > General > About and look for Parts and Service History. Availability depends on the iPhone model and software. Apple distinguishes “Genuine Apple Part” from “Unknown”; an Unknown status can mean a part was installed incompletely, is previously used or non-genuine, or is not functioning as expected. Read Apple’s explanation of iPhone Parts and Service History before interpreting a status.
Check battery health and replacement details
Check Battery Health if it is available, and ask whether the battery has been replaced. Apple notes that battery health information may not be available for an unknown or non-genuine battery. Its guidance also describes possible capacity, fit, performance, behavior, and safety issues with non-genuine replacement batteries. See Apple’s battery guidance for iPhone. A missing battery-health reading is not, by itself, a reliable measure of the battery’s condition.

Read the return policy and written warranty before paying
Your remedy matters if the phone arrives locked, damaged, or unlike the listing. Before purchase, check the return deadline, which reasons qualify, how to send the phone back, who pays return shipping, and how the refund is issued. For marketplace purchases, confirm that the marketplace’s protection applies to this seller and listing; policies differ and some return or refund windows are short. Keep the listing, seller messages, warranty, and receipt, and note the deadline.
Read the written warranty rather than relying on a verbal summary. Check its duration, what parts and repairs it covers, exclusions, whether the remedy is repair, replacement, or refund, how to make a claim, and who pays labor or shipping. FTC guidance recommends getting promises in writing because a business might later refuse a spoken promise. See the FTC’s warranty guidance.

Compare the actual risk, not just the sticker price
Compare a locked phone with an unlocked alternative based on compatibility with your intended carrier, the documented unlock conditions, and the total price after any outstanding obligations. For refurbished and used listings, compare what the seller actually discloses: inspection details, photos of the device, battery and repair information, return terms, warranty, and total cost. A lower price is a poor trade if the lock is unresolved or you have no meaningful remedy when the device differs from its listing.
