What should I bring to a retro gaming expo?
- Ticket or badge details: Keep your QR code or admission confirmation easy to access, and follow the organizer’s directions for pickup and display. RetroGameCon, for example, requires badges to be clearly displayed above the waist.
- A charged phone: Use it for ticket access, schedules, maps, and contacting your group. RetroGameCon says it has no public Wi-Fi, so save important details offline or take screenshots.
- Payment options: Bring a card and some cash. Payment acceptance varies by vendor, and an on-site ATM may not be a dependable backup.
- A small, non-wheeled daypack, if allowed: It can hold personal essentials and purchases, but confirm the event’s size and screening rules first.
- A short shopping list and budget: A varied marketplace can make it easy to lose track of priorities. Treat this as personal planning, not a guarantee of prices or stock.
Do not assume you need to bring a console or controller to play. RetroGameCon advertises free-play systems, but that does not establish the policy at other events.
Can I bring a bag or backpack into the expo?
Check the particular expo’s current FAQ before choosing a bag. Rules are not universal, and permitted bags may still be inspected.
| Event | Published bag guidance |
|---|---|
| Retro World Expo | Small bags and backpacks are allowed and may be inspected. Retro World Expo FAQ |
| RetroGameCon | Bag checks and metal-detector screening are conducted. Suitcases, handcarts, trolleys, oversized strollers, rolling luggage, and wheeled backpacks are prohibited. RetroGameCon FAQ |
A compact, non-wheeled daypack is a sensible option only if your event permits it. If you need to bring a larger carrier or have an access-related need, contact the organizer before arriving. RetroGameCon says the venue is wheelchair accessible, with elevators between the expo hall and panel rooms; loaner wheelchairs are limited and available first come, first served.

Should I bring cash, or will vendors take cards?
Bring a card and some cash because vendor payment methods vary. RetroGameCon’s official FAQ says, “Most vendors DO accept credit cards and other electronic payments. However, it is always a good idea to bring some cash just in case!” The FAQ also notes that its lobby ATM may run out. Retro World Expo likewise says some vendors may accept only cash. Can I bring water, snacks, or outside food?
Check the event’s rules before packing anything to eat or drink. RetroGameCon prohibits outside food and beverages but allows empty water bottles. Retro World Expo permits a single bottle of water or another drink but prohibits outside food. These examples are event-specific, not a general convention rule. What should I leave at home?
Unless the organizer says otherwise, avoid luggage or other bulky carriers that may be prohibited or difficult to manage in crowds. Do not bring outside food, drinks, or a full water bottle until you have checked the event’s policy. And do not pack personal gaming hardware on the assumption that you need it for free play; event-provided systems may be available, but policies differ.
