After a coatings supplier is acquired, ask for a written, product-specific account of what changed—and evidence that the coating still meets your requirements. Cover product identity, formulation and raw materials, manufacturing, performance, documents and approvals, supply, and technical support. Then decide whether the product remains qualified for your application or an alternate source needs qualification.
Start with the exact product and transaction
Ask which legal entity now owns and supplies the coating, and whether the contract counterparty, product name or code, ordering channel, invoice details, manufacturing responsibility, or customer approvals have changed. Request a crosswalk from legacy names and codes to current ordering identifiers, with effective dates and affected regions.
Keep identity changes separate from technical changes. In a communication about its transfer of Sika’s European Industrial Coatings business, Sherwin-Williams said the range was renamed but that the naming change did not affect formulation. It also said raw materials, recipes, manufacturing process, expected quality, and technical data would continue as before. That is a statement about that specific transition, not a general assurance for other products (Sherwin-Williams transition communication).

Ask what changed in the product and supply chain
Request a written change history for the specific SKU. It should identify changes already made and planned, when each applies, and which lots, customers, or regions are affected.

- Specifications, certified properties, and test methods
- Safety data sheets and other technical or regulatory documents
Ask for the supplier’s change-control procedure and the notice and approval rules that apply to your contract. Do not assume another customer’s supplier requirements apply to you. For example, PPG’s automotive supplier requirements list changes to raw-material suppliers, processes and equipment, formulation, manufacturing sites, specifications and test methods, SDSs, and packaging. For covered proposed changes, they call for at least 90 days’ notice and acceptance before changes that may affect characteristics, performance, or regulatory compliance. They also specify discontinuance notice periods of two years for colored pigments and one year for other covered materials. These are PPG automotive supplier requirements, not general industry rules (PPG supplier requirements).
Axalta’s EMEA supplier directives likewise identify changes in manufacturing location or process, processing materials, formulation, packaging material, and auxiliary material; Axalta reserves the right to test a sample before a change takes effect (Axalta EMEA supplier directives).

Demand evidence for performance in your application
Ask the supplier to compare the currently approved coating with the post-transition product against your specification. Request relevant specification limits, certified properties, test methods, and batch or lot data. If testing has been performed, establish how closely it represents your actual process:
- Substrate and surface preparation
- Application method and film build
- Cure conditions and line speed
- Operating environment and exposure
- Acceptance criteria and the party responsible for approving results
If a change could matter, agree on samples, a controlled trial plan, and a release decision before production use. Confirm whether your customer or a regulator must approve the product or process change. PPG says it evaluates proposed changes that may affect product characteristics, performance, or regulatory compliance. Its Industrial Segment manual also describes advance Certificate of Analysis handling for specified raw-material deliveries. Neither source establishes one universal test method for every coating and application; the relevant methods and limits need to be agreed for your specification (PPG supplier requirements; PPG Industrial Segment supplier quality manual).

Supplier continuity claims can be useful evidence, but check their scope. ACTEGA says that, for its own site realignment, formulations were adopted 1:1, production technologies were compared and harmonized, starting-material suppliers were aligned, and product-related data remained the same. It also says packaging was partly reallocated, harmonized, or adapted. Those statements do not establish continuity for another supplier or SKU (ACTEGA site-realignment announcement).
Verify current documents and approvals
For the exact product, destination market, and intended use, ask for the latest dated revisions of the SDS, TDS, specifications, test certificates, regulatory statements, registrations or classifications, and customer-specific approvals. Ask the supplier to explain any changed classification, ingredient disclosure, or approval status, and to identify any required customer notification, requalification, or new approval.

PPG lists SDS changes among its notification items. Sherwin-Williams’ statement that technical data remained the same applied to its named business transition. In either case, verify the documents against your material and jurisdiction rather than relying on a general company statement (PPG supplier requirements; Sherwin-Williams transition communication).

A coating can remain technically unchanged while its capacity, shipping route, or availability changes. Ask which sites will manufacture and ship it, whether capacity or allocation is expected to change, what lead times and order cutoffs apply, and how the supplier will protect open purchase orders and forecast demand. Request a named escalation contact and a written contingency plan for an outage. Clarify the notice terms if the grade is constrained, transferred, replaced, or discontinued.

PPG’s automotive requirements call for adequate safety stock to cover outstanding purchase orders and set the discontinuance notice periods described above for covered materials. Those commitments apply within that supplier-requirement context; your own contract may differ (PPG supplier requirements).
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Confirm who handles technical support and corrective action
Get the post-acquisition names and contact details for technical service, sales, quality, and regulatory support. Confirm whether local application support remains available, how urgent issues are escalated, and who can authorize a deviation. Ask how complaints are handled and what root-cause and corrective-action information the supplier will provide if a transition-related problem occurs.
Axalta’s directives describe written notification and a deviation permit before delivery of nonconforming material, as well as complaint reports involving root-cause analysis and corrective or preventive actions (Axalta EMEA supplier directives). A historical UK government-hosted document containing AkzoNobel’s response identifies quality, reliability, safety, consistency, and technical assistance as customer considerations in that merger context; it is not evidence of current market-wide practice (UK government-hosted AkzoNobel response).
Decide whether to qualify an alternate
Ask whether a technically suitable alternate product, manufacturing site, or supplier is available, and what requalification would involve. Compare options on the criteria that matter to your operation:
- Specification compliance and application performance
- Formulation, site, process, and change-control transparency
- Regulatory and customer approvals for each relevant geography
- Lead time, capacity, inventory, and discontinuance terms
- Technical support and complaint response
- Trial effort, switching cost, qualification time, and operational risk
If continuity is critical, qualifying an alternate before an urgent supply problem may reduce the risk of having no ready option. A historical UK merger document describes dual- or multi-sourcing, including qualifying more than one supplier without buying from all of them, in the case it examined. That context does not show that a particular alternate coating will work for your process; application suitability still needs to be demonstrated (UK government-hosted AkzoNobel response).
