TMR and Hall effect thumbsticks both use contactless magnetic sensing instead of a potentiometer’s rubbing contact, reducing one common source of wear-related drift. TMR uses tunneling magnetoresistance; Hall effect sticks measure a voltage response to a magnetic field. Neither technology guarantees zero drift, and the sensor label alone does not establish which controller is more accurate, responsive, or comfortable.
What is a TMR thumbstick?
TMR stands for tunneling magnetoresistance. A TMR sensor uses magnetic layers separated by an insulating barrier. As the magnetic orientation changes, the sensor’s electrical resistance changes. In a thumbstick, movement changes the magnetic signal; the controller’s electronics translate that signal into a position reading.
GameSir describes its TMR structure as “dual magnetic layers + ultra-thin insulating layer.” TDK describes its TMR angle and linear sensors as contactless sensors for measuring position and angle. GameSir’s technology overview and TDK InvenSense’s TMR overview explain the sensor approach.
Traditional potentiometer sticks detect movement with a contact wiper that travels along a resistive track. Magnetic sensors do not require that rubbing contact at the sensing element, removing that particular wear mechanism. Other parts of the stick and controller can still wear, shift, or fail.

TMR vs. Hall effect thumbsticks
Hall effect sticks also sense movement magnetically without a potentiometer wiper. They use the Hall effect: a magnetic field produces a voltage response that the controller can interpret as position. The key difference is the physical effect used to read the magnetic signal, not a guarantee that one complete controller performs better.

TDK’s “over 10× higher sensitivity” figure applies to its TMR sensor offering, not to every TMR thumbstick compared with every Hall effect stick. GameSir’s technology page lists 12-bit resolution, under 1 ms sensor response time, 5+ million cycles, and under 1 mA operating current in its TMR section. These are GameSir’s vendor specifications, not independently validated head-to-head results. Does TMR prevent stick drift?
It reduces the risk of drift caused by wear at a potentiometer’s sensing track, but it does not make a controller immune to drift or input faults. SCUF notes that impact damage, debris, calibration errors, and component failure can still cause problems with magnetic sticks. Its explanation applies to both TMR and Hall effect approaches: SCUF’s overview of Endurance thumbsticks.
What a player experiences also depends on the stick’s mechanical centering, module geometry, calibration, firmware dead zones, analog-to-digital converter (ADC) resolution, controller polling, and the game’s own settings. The available sources do not establish a general, independently tested accuracy, latency, or battery-life advantage for TMR over Hall effect in complete controllers.

What should you compare when buying a controller?
Compare the complete controller rather than using “TMR” or “Hall effect” as a performance rating. Check the factors that affect whether it works for your setup and feels right in play:
- Platform support: Confirm the exact console, PC, or mobile compatibility and whether wired and wireless modes differ.
- Stick feel and adjustment: Look for calibration and dead-zone settings, and consider trying the sticks or checking the return policy if feel is important to you.
- Firmware and features: Check update support, polling information where provided, and other controls or features you need.
- Serviceability: Review the warranty, repair options, and whether replacement parts are available for the exact model.
- Price: Compare the current price of the complete controllers you are considering, not just their sensor labels.
For examples, SCUF identifies the Omega as a PS5/PC controller with TMR thumbsticks standard. It lists the Valor Pro Wireless for Xbox Series X|S/PC with TMR, while the wired Valor Pro uses Hall effect and supports Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PC. GameSir’s technology page features the Cyclone 2 as a TMR controller. Product lines and support can change, so confirm the exact model’s current manufacturer page before buying. How to check a replacement thumbstick module
Do not assume a generic TMR or Hall effect module will fit a controller just because it uses the same sensing technology. Before ordering, verify:
- Identify the controller’s exact model and hardware revision.
- Check the replacement module’s dimensions and mechanical fit against that model.
- Confirm that its electrical interface is compatible.
- Find out whether installation requires soldering and whether the module needs calibration afterward.
- Check the supplier’s model-specific compatibility information and the controller’s repair or warranty terms.
A secondary overview of TMR joystick controllers also cautions buyers to match modules to specific controllers; the controller manufacturer’s exact compatibility documentation should take priority.
