Instead, quarks and gluons are no longer bound into individual protons and neutrons, but they continue to interact with one another. Those interactions make the plasma behave like a low-viscosity fluid and allow it to absorb energy and momentum from fast particles passing through it.
What changes when matter becomes quark–gluon plasma?
Quantum chromodynamics (QCD) is the theory describing quarks, gluons, and their strong interaction. Quarks carry a property called color charge, and gluons both mediate the strong interaction and carry color charge themselves. “Red,” “green,” and “blue” are quantum labels, not visible colors. The U.S. Department of Energy explains QCD in its QCD overview.
In ordinary matter, the strong force confines quarks and gluons inside composite particles such as protons and neutrons. In energetic collisions between heavy ions, temperatures and densities can become high enough for those nuclear building blocks to melt into QGP. Quarks and gluons are then deconfined: they can move through the medium rather than remaining confined inside separate hadrons. CERN describes how these collisions create and reveal the plasma in its heavy-ion and quark–gluon plasma overview.
Deconfinement is not the same as turning off the strong force. It changes how the quarks and gluons are organized; it does not make them non-interacting.

How does the strong force shape the plasma?
It keeps quarks and gluons interacting
QGP is not simply a cloud of freely moving, independent particles. Barbara Jacak, identified by the DOE as director of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory’s nuclear science division, put it plainly: “Even at that temperature, the strong interactions remain really strong.” Her comment appears in the DOE interview “The Big Questions: Barbara Jacak on the Quark-Gluon Plasma.”
It produces collective, fluid-like motion
The plasma behaves more like a liquid with small viscosity than like the ideal gas researchers once expected. Its constituents interact collectively, so describing the medium requires more than treating each quark or gluon as an isolated particle. The fluid-like behavior is one of the clearest signs that strong interactions remain central to QGP’s dynamics.

It transfers energy and momentum
A fast quark or gluon can produce a jet as it travels through the fireball. As the jet crosses the dense medium, it loses energy to its surroundings—a phenomenon called jet quenching. Researchers study how much energy is lost, as well as the jet’s direction, composition, and momentum, to infer properties of the plasma. The DOE discusses this approach in “Jet Tomography of Hot Matter.”
Does the interaction have one fixed strength?
No single strength value describes every quark and gluon under every QGP condition. The effective behavior depends on the temperature and on what researchers use to probe the medium. For example, a HotQCD calculation described by the DOE found that heavy quarks interact most strongly near the transition temperature and less strongly at higher temperatures. That is a result about heavy-quark interactions in the cited calculation, not a universal rule for every property of the strong force. See the DOE account, “Calculation Shows Why Heavy Quarks Get Caught Up in the Flow.”

How do scientists study a fireball that quickly disappears?
- Create the plasma: Collide massive ions, such as lead nuclei, head-on at high energy to form a tiny, hot fireball.
- Let the fireball cool: As it expands and cools rapidly, quarks and gluons recombine into ordinary hadrons, including pions, kaons, protons, and neutrons.
- Analyze what emerges: Because the plasma is short-lived, scientists infer its properties from the distribution and energy of the particles left behind. Jets provide particularly useful probes because their energy loss and structure reflect exchanges with the medium.
CERN’s explainer describes the fireball’s density as 30 to 50 times the density of an ordinary nucleus. That is CERN’s source-level description, not a universal measurement of every fireball. Jacak’s DOE interview characterizes the temperature as “trillions of degrees Kelvin”; this is an order-of-magnitude description, not an exact temperature reading.

When a jet emerges less energetic or altered after crossing the fireball, that change records energy and momentum exchange with the QGP. By comparing the outgoing particles and jet properties, researchers can use the jet as a probe of the medium that cannot be observed directly.

Jet quenching does not, by itself, provide one universal number for the strong force. It is evidence about how a particular probe interacts with a particular plasma under particular conditions. That is why jet measurements and heavy-quark calculations answer related but distinct questions about QGP.
