It is a float-adjusted market-capitalization-weighted equity index—not a measure of construction output, building starts, cement production or property prices.
What the index measures
The index selects stocks from the broader S&P/BYMA Argentina General Index, then narrows that universe to companies classified in construction-related industries using the Global Industry Classification Standard (GICS). In S&P Dow Jones Indices’ description, it measures the performance of those stocks; its methodology specifies the eligible sub-industries more precisely.
Because the underlying data are listed-share prices, index performance can reflect changes in investors’ valuations of eligible companies. It does not directly record how much construction is taking place or how the prices of buildings and homes are changing.
Which industries are eligible?
The S&P/BYMA methodology names five eligible GICS sub-industries:

- Building Products (20102010)
- Construction & Engineering (20103010)
- Homebuilding (25201030)
The index page’s shorter description refers to construction materials, building products, construction and engineering, homebuilding and related industries. The methodology’s explicit list includes Forest Products, so it is the more precise reference when identifying eligible classifications.
How stocks qualify for the parent index
The sector index draws from the S&P/BYMA Argentina General Index. BYMA describes that parent index as covering local shares listed on the Buenos Aires Stock Exchange. Its eligibility description requires a share to have traded on at least 20% of trading sessions during the preceding 12 months. S&P Dow Jones Indices also describes the parent universe as domestic listed stocks and gives the same trading-frequency threshold.
That parent-index rule is not a guarantee that every eligible company is included in the construction index: a stock must also fall within one of the construction-related GICS sub-industries listed above.
How the index is weighted and maintained
Float-adjusted market-cap weighting
The index uses float-adjusted market-capitalization weighting, abbreviated FMC in the methodology. A company’s influence depends on its float-adjusted market value, so larger eligible companies can carry substantially more weight than smaller ones. The index is not an equal-weighted basket.

Rebalancing and corporate actions
S&P Dow Jones Indices reports that the index rebalances annually in March and is calculated at the end of the day in Argentine pesos (ARS). Adjustments and corporate-action treatment follow the parent S&P/BYMA Argentina General Index. If a company is reclassified under GICS, it may leave this sector index and enter another sector index when the reclassification takes effect.
Series identifiers
For Bloomberg series lookups, S&P Dow Jones Indices lists SPBYCAP for the price-return index and SPBYCAT for the total-return index. These are different return series; check which one a data provider is displaying before comparing levels or performance.

How to interpret reported index figures
Index levels, returns and constituent weights are observations tied to particular dates and index variants, not live values or forecasts. For example, S&P Dow Jones Indices reported six constituents and a largest-constituent weight of 82.5% on August 31, 2026. Its page reported a price-return index level of 32,170.31 ARS and a one-year price return of 36.87% on September 14, 2026. Those figures describe the specified historical snapshots; they do not show construction output or predict later returns.
The 82.5% weight is a useful reminder that the construction label does not mean exposure is spread evenly across many companies. A small number of stocks—and, in that dated snapshot, one especially large constituent—can dominate the index’s movement.

How it differs from the broader Argentine market index
The S&P/BYMA Argentina General Index represents the broader eligible domestic-share universe, while the Construction Index filters that universe by GICS industry classification. Comparing the two can help distinguish construction-related listed-equity exposure from the wider domestic market, but the comparison should use the same observation period and compatible return series.
Also distinguish price return from total return. The official page provides separate Bloomberg identifiers for those variants, so a comparison can be misleading if one figure is a price-return series and the other is a total-return series.
Launch date and historical data
S&P Dow Jones Indices lists October 7, 2019, as the index’s launch date and January 11, 2019, as its first value date. The vendor cautions that performance before launch is hypothetical back-tested history rather than actual index performance.
