The Qualcomm–Arm dispute is two separate legal cases, not one lawsuit with a single outcome. A court entered final judgment for Qualcomm and Nuvia in the earlier case over CPU designs acquired from Nuvia, but Arm appealed. A separate case over Qualcomm’s own licensing agreements was still in trial, according to an October 6, 2026 report. The materials available do not establish that current Snapdragon X laptops must be replaced or are unusable.

What did the original Qualcomm–Arm lawsuit decide?

Arm sued Qualcomm, Qualcomm Technologies, and Nuvia in Delaware in August 2022, after Qualcomm acquired Nuvia in 2021. Nuvia held an Arm architecture license. Arm argued that Nuvia had not obtained consent to assign its license, that the license was terminated, and that Qualcomm and Nuvia did not meet their obligations after termination. Qualcomm argued that its own existing licenses covered the CPU designs it acquired from Nuvia.

A jury trial began on December 16, 2024. According to Qualcomm’s filing, the jury found that Qualcomm had not breached Nuvia’s architecture license agreement (ALA) and that Qualcomm CPUs incorporating designs acquired in the Nuvia deal were licensed under Qualcomm’s ALA. The jury did not decide whether Nuvia itself had breached its license. The court later granted judgment to Nuvia on that remaining issue and entered final judgment for Qualcomm and Nuvia on September 30, 2025. Arm appealed to the Third Circuit on October 1, 2025; the sources cited here do not report an appellate outcome.

Qualcomm described the September 2025 result as a “full victory” in its own release. That was the company’s characterization; the procedural facts are that the court entered final judgment for Qualcomm and Nuvia and Arm appealed.

How is Qualcomm’s separate lawsuit different?

Qualcomm’s separate suit against Arm Holdings concerns Qualcomm’s own agreements, rather than whether Qualcomm could use the particular Nuvia-derived designs under its license. Qualcomm filed it in April 2024, alleging that Arm failed to provide contractual deliverables. Qualcomm later added claims about an Arm notice seeking to terminate Qualcomm’s ALA, alleged failures under a technology license agreement (TLA), and, in March 2026, good-faith negotiation of certain license terms. These are Qualcomm’s allegations, not findings that Arm breached its contracts. Arm disputes Qualcomm’s assertions and says it intends to defend itself.

Issue Arm’s 2022 case concerning Nuvia Qualcomm’s separate case
Core subject Whether the Nuvia license was terminated and whether Qualcomm’s own license covered the acquired CPU designs. Qualcomm’s allegations about deliverables, Qualcomm’s license agreements, and negotiation of certain terms.
What has been decided The jury found that Qualcomm had not breached Nuvia’s ALA and that the Qualcomm CPUs at issue were licensed under Qualcomm’s ALA; the court entered final judgment for Qualcomm and Nuvia on September 30, 2025. The claims described in the filings remain contested; the sources cited here report no verdict.
Status in the sources Arm appealed on October 1, 2025. The appellate outcome is not reported in the sources cited here. Qualcomm’s June 2026 filing scheduled trial to begin October 5, 2026. Android Central reported on October 6 that a five-day jury trial was underway in Delaware, alongside a separate bench trial about whether Arm negotiated next-generation architecture terms in good faith.

The two companies’ filings describe opposing positions. Qualcomm’s June 2026 filing supplies the scheduled start date for its separate case; the October 6 report is the latest trial-status account cited here. Neither establishes that the newer case had reached a verdict.

Does the dispute affect Snapdragon chips or Windows laptops?

The original case addressed Qualcomm’s asserted contractual right to use the CPU designs it acquired from Nuvia. Qualcomm’s filing reports that the jury found Qualcomm CPUs containing those designs were licensed under Qualcomm’s ALA, and the court entered final judgment for Qualcomm and Nuvia. Reporting associates Nuvia-derived CPU designs with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon products, including its PC processors.

That judgment does not settle every issue between the companies. It does not decide the separate claims about Qualcomm’s agreements, future royalty terms, future architecture negotiations, or Arm’s appeal. A headline in Android Central’s October 6 report said Qualcomm wanted to freeze Arm royalty payments for five years; that was a request reported as part of the current litigation, not a decision by the court.

In the materials cited here, there is no reported recall, retail-device injunction, or requirement that owners replace Snapdragon X laptops. That is a limited statement about what these sources establish, not a guarantee about future litigation or product plans. Qualcomm also reported that Arm withdrew its October 22, 2024 notice of breach on January 8, 2025, saying it had no current plan to terminate Qualcomm’s ALA while reserving its rights pending litigation.

Should you avoid buying a Snapdragon Windows laptop?

The dispute alone is not, on the evidence available here, a reason to avoid a particular Snapdragon Windows laptop or replace one you own. The original case reached a judgment concerning the designs at issue, while the separate contract case remained unresolved in the October 6, 2026 trial report. These legal developments do not amount to evidence that a specific retail laptop is unusable or will lose support.
