That color-specific explanation comes from a secondary source, however; Google’s current Android help does not confirm it as a universal Chrome behavior.
What the purple download icon next to a website means
Chrome Story reported on August 3, 2026, that the purple down-arrow beside a website marks a page saved for offline use. Its report says the saved page can be found in Chrome’s Downloads area, under a Pages tab when that tab is available. The report also says the offline copy is stored in Chrome’s browser cache, rather than as a file in the device’s Downloads folder. Chrome Story’s explanation is the direct source for this color-specific interpretation.
Google’s current Android download help does not document the purple icon or confirm that interpretation. The icon’s exact appearance and the Pages tab may vary by Chrome version or device. Treat the purple marker as a reported clue, not a guaranteed status indicator across all Android phones.
Check whether Chrome saved a page or is downloading a file
A purple marker beside a site is different from the status of an ordinary file download. Chromium’s Android interface text uses explicit labels for file-download states, including “Downloading file…,” “File downloaded,” “1 download failed,” “1 download pending,” “1 download scheduled,” and “Blocked by your organization.” Those labels—not the purple site marker—indicate the reported state of a file transfer. Chromium’s Android UI strings document these status messages.

|---|---|---|
| Purple arrow beside a website | A page saved for offline use, according to the secondary report; Google does not confirm the color mapping. | Chrome’s Downloads area; look for a Pages tab if present. |
| A file-download status message | A file is downloading, complete, failed, pending, scheduled, or blocked by an organization, depending on the message. | Chrome’s Downloads area or the Android notification. |
How to check Chrome downloads on Android
- In Chrome, tap the three-dot menu, then tap Downloads. If the address bar is at the bottom, swipe up on it and tap Downloads, as Google’s Android instructions describe.
- If a Pages tab appears, check it for saved offline pages. The tab and its availability are not documented in Google’s current help, so it may not appear on every device or version.
- For a file download, read the item’s status in Downloads or check the Android notification. Google says you can pause or cancel downloads there, and share, delete, or rename downloaded files.
- To locate a downloaded file on the device, open Android’s Files app. An offline page reported in Chrome’s Pages list should not be assumed to be a separate file in that folder.
Does the purple icon mean a virus or a harmful download?
No conclusion about a virus, a harmful file, or an active transfer follows from the purple color alone. The color-specific report associates the marker with offline page saving, while Chromium’s download-status labels distinguish file-transfer states. Check the page list, download item, or notification rather than treating color by itself as a security warning.

Offline page saving is not a new kind of browser capability: Google described Chrome offline-reading features for Android in a May 8, 2017 announcement, including a “Download link” option and a “Download Page Later” button in the offline dinosaur flow. That announcement said more than 45 million web pages were downloaded every week at the time; it is a historical 2017 figure, not a current usage statistic. It does not establish when the purple marker appeared or whether Chrome automatically saves pages today. Google’s 2017 announcement provides that historical context.
