The AT&T Turbo indicator means your wireless line is subscribed to AT&T Turbo, an optional add-on. It does not prove that Turbo is actively improving your connection at that moment. To confirm why it appears or whether you’re paying for the add-on, check your AT&T account.
What the AT&T Turbo indicator means
AT&T defines the Turbo alpha tag or icon as an indicator that the line is subscribed to Turbo. AT&T says it can appear in the top corner of the lock screen and on the phone’s draw-down screen. Its position and appearance can vary by device, so it may not look identical on every phone. AT&T’s service terms explain the icon.
The indicator is not a 5G signal-strength marker, an error message, or a sign that you have received extra data. It points to a subscription associated with your line.
Does the icon mean Turbo is active right now?
No. Subscription and current activity are different: AT&T says the icon may remain visible when Turbo is inactive, including when the phone is using Wi-Fi or after the hotspot allotment has been exceeded. Seeing the label alone does not tell you whether the feature is currently applying to your data.

What AT&T Turbo does—and what it does not do
AT&T describes Turbo as an optional add-on that optimizes eligible premium and hotspot data allotments to “performance data.” The stated aim is to help data performance for activities such as gaming, live streaming, and video chat. It does not add data to your plan and does not upgrade voice or messaging. See AT&T’s Turbo overview and FAQ.
Turbo is conditional, not a speed guarantee. AT&T says it is for eligible 5G smartphones on its own network in the United States, and it is unavailable on Wi-Fi and while roaming. Actual performance depends on factors such as coverage, congestion, the device, and third-party limitations; AT&T cautions that benefits may not be noticeable during peak congestion. AT&T has not published a quantified speed or latency improvement in the sources cited here.

How to check or cancel a Turbo subscription
- For postpaid service: Sign in to your AT&T account and review the wireless line’s add-ons. AT&T directs customers to their online account to manage Turbo.
- For prepaid service: Open your account’s Add-Ons section and check whether Turbo is listed.
- If you do not want it: Use the account controls to manage or cancel the add-on, and review the displayed renewal or expiration details before confirming.
AT&T says postpaid Turbo renews monthly until canceled. Prepaid expiration and Auto Renew rules differ, so check the terms shown for your prepaid add-on rather than assuming the postpaid renewal rule applies.
What Turbo costs
AT&T’s current product page lists these prices for eligible service; plan eligibility applies, and prices or qualifying plans can change. Check the account or current AT&T terms before enrolling.

AT&T introduced Turbo on May 2, 2024, initially announcing a $7 monthly charge per eligible postpaid line. Its current overview also lists prepaid daily and monthly options. AT&T’s launch announcement provides the original timing and launch price.

That depends on your plan and how you use cellular data. Consider whether you have an eligible plan and allotments, whether you often use cellular data in congestion-prone places, and how frequently you rely on Wi-Fi or roam. Weigh those circumstances against the recurring price and the fact that AT&T does not guarantee a noticeable performance change. The indicator itself is not evidence that you are getting a particular speed benefit.
