He did not announce a layoff total or identify affected roles, and said the reductions would be less extensive than in 2023 and would not touch every team. The memo did not establish that AI caused each job elimination.
What did Pichai say in the January 2024 memo?
CBS News reported that Pichai said Google would “remove layers [of its workforce]” to create capacity for investment in the company’s “big priorities.” He also wrote, “The reality is that to create the capacity for this investment, we have to make tough choices.” A Google representative confirmed the memo to CBS MoneyWatch.
Pichai described the planned cuts as less extensive than the previous year’s reductions and said they would “not touch every team.” He did not name the roles or teams affected, or give a total for the 2024 plan. The memo stated a resource-allocation rationale; it did not say every reduction was caused by AI.
How many people did Google lay off?
The figure often associated with the warning belongs to the earlier round of cuts, not the unspecified 2024 plan:

- 2023: Google eliminated more than 12,000 roles, according to CBS News’ January 18, 2024 report. The reported cuts spanned areas including hardware, shopping, core engineering, policy and ad sales.
- 2024 memo: Pichai gave no total. The 2023 figure should not be presented as the number planned for 2024.
The available reporting does not establish a company-confirmed total for Google job cuts across 2024–2026. A July 25, 2026 TechCrunch roundup described cuts occurring through different processes and noted there was no announced overall 2026 total; any estimates in that roundup are secondary reporting, not a company-confirmed tally.
Did Google say it was firing people because of AI?
Not in the January 2024 memo as reported by CBS. Pichai connected the need for “tough choices” to creating capacity for investment in company priorities, amid Google’s AI push, but did not attribute each job elimination to AI. Those are related facts, not proof of a one-to-one cause.

Later events add context without resolving that question. In a July 16, 2026 report, The Guardian said Alphabet Workers Union members had delivered a petition with more than 4,500 signatures seeking layoff protections, guaranteed severance and buyouts before mandatory layoffs, among other safeguards. The Guardian reported that Google did not comment on whether AI had played a role in its layoffs. The petition’s signatory count is not a layoff count, and the absence of a comment does not establish the cause of any particular reduction.
On July 22, 2026, Pichai’s official Q2 earnings remarks discussed AI investment and business activity across Search, Cloud and products. Those remarks were not a layoff announcement and do not establish why a particular team was reduced.
How do Google executives view AI and jobs?
Executives have expressed different perspectives, which should not be mistaken for a workforce policy or guarantee. In a May 19, 2026 WIRED interview, Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis argued that productivity gains could let teams do more work rather than cut developers. He said, “if engineers are becoming three or four times more productive, then we just [want to] do three or four times more stuff.” That was Hassabis’s stated preference in the interview, not a promise about staffing across Alphabet.
Workers have voiced a different concern. In The Guardian’s July 2026 report, Alphabet Workers Union president and Google software engineer Parul Koul characterized the cuts as “profit being put over the people that make this company run.” That is Koul’s view, not an independently established finding about the cause of all cuts.

Bottom line on the headline
The headline’s warning was real, but it referred to a January 2024 memo, not a new announcement. Pichai said Google would reduce workforce layers to free capacity for priorities, against the backdrop of heavy AI investment. He gave no number for the planned cuts, and the statement alone does not show that AI was the reason for every job loss.
