On Steam, “Coming Soon” means the developer has chosen not to show customers a more specific release date. The page is public and can be wishlisted, but the game is not available to buy or play from that page yet. The label does not promise a launch date or guarantee Steam promotion.

What “Coming Soon” means on Steam

Steamworks separates a game’s intended release date from how much of that date appears on its store page. Developers set an intended exact date in Steamworks, then choose whether customers see an exact date, a month and year, a quarter, a year, or no date. “Coming Soon” is the no-date display; it does not establish that the developer has no planned date internally. Steam’s Coming Soon documentation and release-date guidance explain these settings.

Once Valve has approved the page and the developer makes it public as Coming Soon, customers can view the store page and Community Hub and add the game to a wishlist. Steam’s release options documentation says there is no option on the page to purchase or play the game at this stage.

What the label does not tell you

  • The release date: “Coming Soon” itself supplies no date. Check the rest of the page for any date or timeframe the developer has chosen to display.
  • Whether the game is ready or on schedule: It is a pre-release storefront state, not a promise that a particular launch date will hold. Steam notes that plans can change and developers control release timing. Steam’s release-date guidance covers the public date options.
  • Whether Steam will prominently recommend the game: Wishlist counts generally are not an algorithmic visibility factor, though Steam lists exceptions such as Popular Upcoming. Steam’s visibility guidance describes how wishlists relate to visibility.
  • Whether a date exists in the developer’s Steamworks settings: Steamworks asks developers to set an intended exact date even when they choose a less specific public display or “Coming Soon.”

How timing and upcoming-list placement work

Steam requires new products to have a Coming Soon page live for at least two weeks before release. If a live page’s release date is within 14 days, the developer cannot change it without contacting Steam. These are Steamworks rules, not estimates of how long a particular game will remain Coming Soon. See Steam’s Coming Soon requirements.

On upcoming lists, Steam treats a month-only release date as the last day of that month and a quarter as the last day of that quarter. A game with no displayed date appears behind entries with more specific dates. This affects list ordering; it does not predict when the game will actually launch. Steam’s upcoming-list guidance explains the ordering.

Separate from a game’s Coming Soon period, Steam says store-presence review typically takes 3–5 business days and recommends submitting a page at least 7 business days before the developer wants it to go live. Those are process estimates and recommendations for developers, not a forecast for any individual game. Steam’s review-process documentation has the details.

Should you wishlist a Coming Soon game?

Wishlisting is a practical way to track a game. Steam says users who have a game on their wishlist when it releases in Early Access or full release will receive an email and/or mobile push notification. Delivery depends on notification rules and customer settings; Steam also describes cooldowns and other conditions. A wishlist is not a purchase commitment and does not confirm a release date. See Steam’s wishlist documentation.

How to compare two Coming Soon pages

If two Steam pages both say “Coming Soon,” that shared label does not show that the games will launch together or that either developer has a more certain schedule. Compare the details actually shown on each page:
