The punchline came after asking, “What is zero divided by zero?” Contemporary reports tied the Easter egg to iPhones running iOS 8; they do not establish whether Siri still gives the same answer today.
What did Siri say about Cookie Monster?
Siri’s reported answer imagined splitting zero cookies evenly among zero friends. The question, it said, did not make sense—and then came the punchline: “And Cookie Monster is sad that there are no cookies, and you are sad that you have no friends.” BetaNews and TIME reproduced that wording in their contemporaneous 2015 coverage (BetaNews; TIME).
Why is Cookie Monster sad?
In the joke, zero cookies are available, so Cookie Monster has nothing to eat. The joke extends the same empty-splitting thought experiment to the person asking: Siri says that person is sad because they have no friends. It is a playful response to an undefined mathematical expression, not a serious explanation of division.
Does Siri still tell this joke?
The reports establish the joke as a 2015 Siri Easter egg, not as a current feature. TIME reported on June 30, 2015, that it appeared to work for iPhone users upgraded to iOS 8. The available contemporary accounts do not verify Siri’s behavior on current software or whether it varies by device, language, or region.
