Samsung called it the world’s first such chip; that “first” claim comes from the company’s announcement, rather than an independent confirmation.
What was the 50nm DRAM chip?
It was a 1-gigabit DDR2 dynamic random-access memory (DRAM) device. “50nm” refers to the process technology Samsung said it used to manufacture the chip; it does not describe the memory’s capacity or transfer rate. Samsung presented the process as three generations beyond its then-current 80nm production process.
How did Samsung say the process worked?
Samsung said it combined two three-dimensional transistor-structure technologies—RCAT (Recess Channel Array Transistor) and SEG (Selective Epitaxial Growth)—with a composite dielectric layer. The company attributed improved speed characteristics and data-storage capability to this design. Its announcement did not supply independent measurements that verify those effects.
The productivity figures Samsung reported were about manufacturing, not the performance of an individual chip in a computer:
#1 Best Overall
- Up to 80MB/s transfer speed
- Works with cell phones, smartphones, Android Tablets, Tablet PCs.
- Great speed and performance for Full HD video recording, high resolution pictures, mobile gaming, music and more.
- Water proof, Temperature proof, x-ray proof, magnetic proof
- Compatible with devices with Micro SDHC and Micro SDXC slots.
- Samsung said the 50nm process had 55% higher production productivity than its 60nm process.
- It also said the 50nm process offered twice the productivity of its 80nm process.
These are company-reported process comparisons from 2006, not consumer benchmark results or evidence that a computer using the chip would run a given percentage faster.
When did development lead to production?
The announcement of development, Intel qualification and production were separate milestones. Samsung’s 2006 announcement described a developed chip and outlined a production plan; it was not confirmation that mass production had already begun.

| Date | Milestone |
|---|---|
| 20 October 2006 | Samsung announced development of the 1Gb DDR2 chip using a 50nm process. The company said production was planned for 2008. |
| 19 July 2007 | Samsung reported that Intel had certified its 50nm-class 1Gb DDR2 DRAM, including an 800Mbps product it described as having characteristics suitable for mass production. Samsung still presented first-half 2008 mass production as a plan. |
| September 2008 | Samsung later said that 50nm-class production had begun that month. This date comes from the company’s February 2009 retrospective. |
In 2007, Samsung said the process was intended for DDR2, DDR3, graphics and mobile DRAM product families. That was the company’s roadmap, not confirmation in the cited announcements that the process had been deployed in every category.
What did Samsung forecast for the market?
In 2006, Samsung forecast a US$5 billion market for 50nm DRAM in 2008 and US$55 billion cumulatively through 2011. Those were forecasts made at the time; they should not be read as verified market totals or Samsung sales figures.

Did the announcement identify a consumer memory module?
No. The announcement concerned a DRAM chip, and the available record does not establish that this precise die was sold to consumers or identify a retail module containing it. DDR2 memory modules are a downstream product category: Samsung’s 2009 glossary describes SO-DIMM modules for notebooks and other small systems, and UDIMM as a common desktop DRAM module. That does not establish compatibility with any particular computer or show that a module on sale today uses the 2006 die.
