A compromised home router can expose files on connected storage, let an attacker change security settings, redirect web traffic, or provide a foothold for attacks on other devices in your home. The most useful defenses are straightforward: replace default administrator credentials, use WPA3 or WPA2 Wi-Fi encryption, install available firmware updates, and disable features you do not need.

What router security flaws can expose

Router weaknesses are not all the same, and a reported flaw in one product does not mean every router is vulnerable. Documented problems include weak or default passwords, flaws in administration software, exposed services, unsafe default settings, and firmware that has not been updated. The FTC’s ASUS case and D-Link case illustrate what can happen when such weaknesses are present.

  • Files on connected storage: The FTC’s ASUS case described weaknesses in cloud-storage authentication and router-connected storage that could expose files.
  • Router settings and web traffic: The ASUS case described flaws that could allow security settings to be changed without the owner’s knowledge. Attackers who control a router may also alter how it handles web traffic.
  • Other devices on the network: In its D-Link case, the FTC described a command-injection flaw that could let remote attackers take control of routers by sending unauthorized commands over the internet. The agency said a compromised router could redirect a user to a fraudulent website or be used to attack computers, phones, cameras, and connected appliances on the local network.

In the ASUS matter, the FTC reported that more than 12,900 consumers’ connected storage devices were accessed in February 2014. That is a figure tied to the case and period—not an estimate of how many routers are vulnerable today. In 2017, FTC Bureau of Consumer Protection Director Jessica Rich said, “Hackers are increasingly targeting consumer routers and IP cameras — and the consequences for consumers can include device compromise and exposure of their sensitive personal information.”

How to secure your home router

Work through these settings in the router’s administration interface or the manufacturer’s app. Names and locations vary by model; use the device-specific instructions from its manufacturer or internet provider if you cannot find a setting.

TP-Link Dual-Band AX3000 Wi-Fi 6 Wireless Gigabit Internet Router for Home
  • Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
  • A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
  • Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
  • Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
  • Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.
  1. Change the administrator login. Replace the default administrative username and password with credentials that are difficult to guess. Use a dedicated administrator password, not the password you use to join Wi-Fi.
  2. Set a distinct Wi-Fi name and password. Choose a network name that does not reveal personal details, and use a strong Wi-Fi password. Keep it separate from the administrator credentials.
  3. Choose modern Wi-Fi encryption. Set security to WPA3 Personal if available; otherwise use WPA2 Personal. The FTC identifies WPA3 as the newer, best option in its home Wi-Fi guidance. If the router only offers older WPA or WEP options, check for a software update. If WPA2 or WPA3 remains unavailable afterward, consider replacing the router.
  4. Install the latest firmware available for your specific router. Check the manufacturer’s support information for updates rather than assuming an update notice is complete. If your internet provider supplied the router, ask whether it installs updates automatically. The FTC’s ASUS case underscores why timely fixes and update information matter.
  5. Turn off features you do not use. Disable remote management, Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS), and Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) if you do not need them. These features can be convenient, but the FTC advises that they can weaken network security.
  6. Set up a guest network. Give visitors access to a separate guest Wi-Fi network instead of sharing the primary password. Where supported, guest access separates their devices from your main network.
  7. Check the firewall and sign out. Confirm that the router’s built-in firewall is enabled, then log out of the administrator interface after changing settings.
  8. Review connected devices. Check the router’s device list and secure the phones, computers, cameras, and other connected equipment too. The FTC’s connected-device guidance explains why a poorly protected device can create another route into a home network.

These measures reduce exposure; they do not establish that a router has no vulnerabilities. A router’s available controls and menu labels vary by model.

When to replace a router

Replacement is not automatically necessary whenever a router is old or a security concern arises. First check whether its software can be updated. If it still cannot offer WPA2 Personal or WPA3 Personal, the FTC advises considering a replacement.

When comparing a replacement, check whether the manufacturer provides firmware updates, whether the router supports WPA3 or WPA2 Personal, whether you can change its default administrator credentials, and whether you can disable remote management and other unnecessary features. A Wi-Fi router with WPA3 is one possible choice, but buying new hardware does not by itself change its settings, guarantee future updates, or prevent every attack. The FTC guidance cited here does not endorse a particular brand or model.
