What did Germany’s intelligence chief warn about?
On 5 October 2026, Sinan Selen, president of Germany’s Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution (BfV), spoke at a hearing of parliament’s intelligence oversight committee in Berlin. AFP reported him saying: “I already see substantial shortcomings that create potential for abuse.” He also warned that collected data could be passed to “state agencies,” and that this could create risks including the “potential shutdown of entire products.”
On resilience and availability, Selen said: “In terms of resilience and availability (this) could confront us with problems.” The remarks point to two broad concerns: who can access data collected by connected products, and whether a product or service could be made unavailable. AFP’s account is reporting, not a published transcript; it does not provide technical details about the data, products, or mechanisms Selen had in mind. Which products were mentioned?
The report cites electric vehicles and robot vacuum cleaners as examples of Chinese high-tech product categories whose sales are growing. These are examples under scrutiny, not findings that every vehicle or vacuum cleaner from China is unsafe. The report names no specific model and documents no incident involving a named consumer product.

It therefore does not establish that a specific Chinese smart device sends data to a government, or that a particular connected product can be remotely shut down. Those are risks raised in general terms, not confirmed behaviors attributed to identified devices.
How does the warning fit Germany’s wider security debate?
AFP situates Selen’s comments amid German scrutiny of Chinese technology and investment. It reports that Germany had announced a phase-out of components from Chinese telecom companies in its 5G networks over security concerns, and that authorities had blocked or watered down attempted Chinese investments in strategic sectors such as chipmaking. These points provide policy context; the report does not say that every part of this debate was discussed at Selen’s hearing.

A separate Bundestag news item dated 18 May 2026 summarized a Green Party parliamentary question about security risks from Chinese technologies and investments in critical infrastructure. Lawmakers asked, among other things, what the federal government knew about the share of high-risk suppliers in critical components of German mobile infrastructure in 2025. The item records the question but does not provide the government’s answer or a supplier-share figure. See the Bundestag item.

The published account establishes that Selen raised potential risks involving data access and product availability. It does not specify which products or data he meant, explain how data might be transferred or a product shut down, or report consumer guidance from the BfV. It also supplies no statistic that quantifies the central warning. Without those details, the remarks do not support ranking brands or models, or drawing a conclusion about an individual device.

For organizations assessing connected technology, the concerns can be translated into questions about data access and transmission, remote operation and updates, supplier or component concentration, and the consequences of disruption to availability. These are practical assessment areas derived from the stated concerns, not a published BfV scoring framework or a product test.
