Before using an AI prescribing service, find out who is clinically responsible, what the AI does, whether the medication can be prescribed remotely where you live, what follow-up is available, how your information is handled, and what the full service costs. Verify each answer with the specific service for your location; a general description of telehealth or AI does not establish that a particular service is suitable for you.
1. Who is responsible for my care?
A prescription should be tied to an identifiable clinician, not just a platform or automated recommendation. Before submitting your health history, ask:
- Who will review my information and make the prescribing decision?
- Where is that clinician licensed, and are they authorized to treat patients in my location?
- How can I contact the clinician or clinical team after the consultation?
- What information will the clinician review, including my current medicines, allergies, medical history, and possible contraindications?
Ask what happens if your history is incomplete or details conflict. The service should explain whether it will request clarification, defer the decision, or direct you to another kind of care rather than treating missing information as a safe basis for a recommendation.
2. What does the AI do, and what does a clinician review?
“AI-powered” does not tell you whether software organizes information, suggests possible options, or generates a specific treatment plan. Ask the service to describe the AI’s role in plain language:

- What information does the AI use, and what does it produce?
- Does it recommend a specific medication or treatment plan?
- Does a clinician independently review the underlying information and basis for the recommendation before a prescription is issued?
- Can the clinician change or reject the recommendation?
- What happens if the AI cannot reach a recommendation or your answers do not fit its assumptions?
The FDA’s clinical decision support guidance distinguishes software functions and considers whether a health professional can independently review the basis for a recommendation. That guidance can help you frame questions; it is not an endorsement or approval of every service that describes itself as AI. See the FDA’s clinical decision support guidance.
3. Can an online clinician prescribe this medication where I live?
Do not assume that a medication can be prescribed remotely just because a service offers online visits. The answer can depend on the medication, the clinician, and your location. Ask whether the service can prescribe the specific medication you need where you are, what evaluation it requires, and whether any in-person assessment or continuing follow-up is necessary.

For controlled medications, federal telemedicine flexibilities described by HHS extend through December 31, 2026, subject to criteria. That date and extension do not mean every controlled medication can be prescribed by every service or clinician. Check the current requirements and the service’s rules before relying on remote prescribing; consult HHS’s controlled-substance telehealth prescribing page for the federal policy.

Do not assume HIPAA applies to every consumer app or service. The privacy framework depends on the service and the parties handling your information, so read the service’s privacy terms and ask which obligations apply to it. HHS guidance recommends considering policies, technology security, training, informed consent, identity verification, secure data transmission, and secure communications; its page was last updated July 29, 2024. See HHS’s telehealth privacy and security strategy guidance.
HHS’s Office for Civil Rights also advises providers to explain the remote technology being used, its privacy and security safeguards, and whether it uses online tracking technologies. It notes that unauthorized access can lead to harms including identity theft, embarrassment, bias, and financial or reputational problems. Read the HHS OCR resource on privacy and security risks in remote telehealth.

Get the complete price and cancellation terms before providing payment information. Ask whether the total includes:
- The consultation or clinician fee.

Ask what the service cannot assess or treat, and when it will refer you to in-person or urgent care. Research an unfamiliar operator and verify its contact information before sharing personal or financial details, as the FTC advises when buying health products and services online.
