What ports are on the current Mac mini?
Apple’s current Mac mini technical specifications list two USB-C ports on the front and three Thunderbolt ports with USB-C connectors on the back. The front USB-C ports support USB 3 data transfer up to 10 Gb/s. The back also has HDMI, Ethernet and a 3.5 mm headphone jack.
On the models listed on Apple’s current specifications page, the base model’s three rear ports are Thunderbolt 4, up to 40 Gb/s, while the Pro model’s are Thunderbolt 5, up to 120 Gb/s. The Ethernet port is listed as 2.5Gb, with a 10Gb Ethernet configuration available. Check Apple’s page for the exact model you are considering, since its live lineup and specifications may change.
How do the 2024 M4 and M4 Pro models differ?
For the 2024 generation, both M4 and M4 Pro Mac mini models have two front USB-C ports, a headphone jack, HDMI and Gigabit Ethernet configurable to 10Gb Ethernet. Their rear Thunderbolt ports differ:

These are specifications for the 2024 models, not a guide to every Mac mini generation. Apple’s 2024 Mac mini technical specifications provide the model-specific details.
Which adapters might you need?
HDMI display or TV
Connect an HDMI display or TV directly to the Mac mini’s HDMI port. Apple said in its October 2024 Mac mini announcement that HDMI allows a display or TV to connect without an adapter.

USB-A keyboard, drive or other accessory
The port layouts listed by Apple use USB-C and Thunderbolt/USB-C rather than USB-A. If your accessory has a USB-A plug, use a compatible USB-C-to-USB-A adapter. Match the adapter to the accessory’s data-rate and power requirements; a basic adapter may not suit every device or use.
DisplayPort monitor
The rear Thunderbolt/USB-C ports support DisplayPort video output. For a monitor with DisplayPort input, use a compatible USB-C-to-DisplayPort cable or adapter if the monitor cannot connect through HDMI or USB-C. Check that the adapter works in the required direction and supports your monitor’s resolution and refresh rate.

Several older accessories or more connections
A USB-C hub or Thunderbolt dock can add connections, but it is optional. Before choosing one, confirm that its host connection, ports and display support suit your Mac mini model and the devices you plan to attach.
Wired network or headphones
The Mac mini has built-in Ethernet, so a separate Ethernet adapter is generally unnecessary for a wired connection; the available Ethernet speed depends on the model and configuration. A built-in 3.5 mm jack handles wired headphones. Apple lists advanced support for high-impedance headphones.

Check display support before buying a cable or dock
Having the right connector does not by itself guarantee that a particular multi-monitor setup will work at its desired resolution and refresh rate. Check the exact Mac mini generation and chip, the number of displays, each display’s input and mode, and the specifications of the cable, adapter or dock. Apple’s current specifications give display support for the models listed there; Apple’s 2024 specifications list different supported display combinations for M4 and M4 Pro. Use the page for your exact model before relying on a particular display arrangement.

A quick compatibility check
- Identify the Mac mini generation and chip, then check its Apple specifications for port and display support.
- Identify the connector on your accessory or monitor and whether it needs USB-A, HDMI, DisplayPort, USB-C or Ethernet.
- For USB accessories, check the data-rate and power needs; for displays, check the number of screens, resolution and refresh rate.
- Use HDMI or Ethernet directly when those built-in ports meet your needs. Buy an adapter, hub or dock only for connections the Mac mini does not provide or cannot provide in the required configuration.
