Photo-induced force microscopy (PiFM) can map surface topography and provide nanoscale spectroscopic contrast that may help identify the material in a small semiconductor-surface particle. It is best understood as a targeted follow-up method—not a universal defect-size detector, electrical test, or replacement for higher-throughput SEM/EDX review. The semiconductor examples available are from a supplier-sponsored application article, so they demonstrate reported use cases rather than guaranteed performance across materials or instruments.

What PiFM measures

PiFM combines optical excitation with a sharp scanning-probe tip. Light interacting with the tip and sample produces a local force response, which is detected through cantilever motion and mapped as the probe scans. The signal can include dipole-related force contributions and forces associated with photothermal processes, as described in the 2022 tutorial review by Abid Anjum Sifat, Junghoon Jahng, and Eric O. Potma, “Photo-induced force microscopy (PiFM) – principles and implementations.”

That signal reflects the local optical or photothermal response under the measurement configuration. It is not a direct, universal measurement of every electrical, structural, or chemical property of a defect.

What it can help determine about a surface feature

Whether a surface feature is present and what it looks like

Topography can show that a particle or other surface feature is present and provide shape and height information. This answers a morphology question; it does not, on its own, establish what the feature is made of.

Whether the feature has a distinguishable material signature

PiFM’s spectroscopic contrast can help distinguish materials that look similar in a topographic image. Molecular Vista’s supplier-sponsored AZoM application article, published October 5, 2026, reports examples in which PiFM spectra were compared with reference FTIR spectra for particle identification. An identification depends on interpretable signal, suitable reference spectra, and the measurement conditions; a spectral match is evidence to assess, not an infallible verdict.

What semiconductor examples have been reported

The October 5, 2026 AZoM article sponsored by Molecular Vista describes PiFM review of particles on wafer surfaces. It reports a 15 nm Teflon particle distinguished from its quartz substrate, two similar-looking particles identified as silica and polystyrene, and a 5 nm particle identified as polystyrene. These examples illustrate the kind of small-particle composition question the method may help address. They do not establish a minimum detectable size for other materials, defects, instruments, or measurement conditions.

The same article describes a Vista 300 workflow that imports defect coordinate maps, aligns the system using wafer fiducials, and visits selected defects for topography and PiF-IR spectra. It reports roughly two minutes per defect, or about 30 defects per hour, conditional on coordinate accuracy. The article also says SEM/EDX has an order-of-magnitude throughput advantage over the described workflow. These are supplier-sponsored workflow claims, not independently validated universal throughput benchmarks.

What PiFM cannot establish by itself

  • A universal minimum defect size: the reported 5 nm particle is an application example, not a cross-material detection threshold. Spatial resolution, signal strength, spectrum quality, and confidence in a material identification are separate considerations. A 2026 review by Jafari, Khojastehnezhad, and Siaj discusses sub-10 nm capability, practical resolution constraints around 5 nm in common conditions, and specialized reports of sub-nanometre results. Those favorable demonstrations should not be treated as routine semiconductor defect-review performance.
  • Electrical activity or yield impact: morphology and optical or photothermal chemical contrast do not by themselves show whether a feature affects device operation or causes yield loss.
  • Complete subsurface or device composition: PiFM is a scanning-probe method that measures a surface-localized response. A surface result is not a complete cross-section or full-device diagnosis.
  • Definitive chemistry without interpretable evidence: material identification requires a suitable spectrum and an appropriate comparison. Report the reference and measurement context rather than treating a spectral resemblance as conclusive on its own.
  • Production-line screening replacement: the supplier-sponsored semiconductor workflow presents PiFM as a targeted complement to SEM/EDX, not as its replacement.

How PiFM and SEM/EDX fit different review questions

Review question or constraint PiFM SEM/EDX
What it contributes in the described workflow Targeted topography and spectroscopic contrast for selected surface defects; the Molecular Vista-sponsored AZoM article positions it for small or organic particles that need further material identification. Higher-throughput review of larger defects in the workflow described by the same article.
When to consider follow-up When a selected particle’s morphology or material signature needs investigation, particularly if existing elemental analysis does not adequately identify it. For broader or higher-throughput defect review; the cited workflow says it retains a throughput advantage over the described PiFM process.
What the result does not establish by itself Electrical impact, yield effect, or complete subsurface composition. The cited application article does not establish that SEM/EDX answers every small-particle identification question; choose the method based on the specific feature and information needed.

This division is a workflow example, not a universal rule for every fab, instrument, or sample. For a particular defect, choose based on the question, spatial scale and sampled volume, type of chemical or elemental specificity needed, sample-damage considerations, throughput, and whether targeted follow-up is practical.

A practical way to interpret a PiFM defect result

  1. Separate detection from identification. First establish what topography shows about the feature. Then assess whether the spectroscopic signal supports a material distinction.
  2. Check how the spectral comparison was made. Note the reference spectrum, measurement mode, and whether the signal is sufficiently interpretable to support the proposed identification.
  3. Keep the claim within the measurement. A surface morphology or material result does not prove electrical activity, yield impact, root cause, or the composition of unseen device layers.
  4. Use targeted follow-up when the question exceeds the result. Select additional analysis based on the unresolved question rather than treating PiFM as a complete defect diagnosis.
