Before carrying a part over, verify that it works with the replacement motherboard and fits the case, power, and cooling requirements. A laptop, all-in-one, or proprietary prebuilt may offer fewer standard upgrade options than a conventional desktop.
Which PC parts are usually reusable?
Reusability depends on the exact parts in both the old and upgraded systems. A component is not a safe carry-over just because it can be connected: check its interface, platform support, physical fit, power needs, and practical condition.
| Existing part | Reuse outlook | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| SATA SSD or hard drive | Often reusable | Available SATA data and power connections, free ports, mounting space, and drive health. |
| M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD | Often reusable if the new board supports it | NVMe protocol, drive length, supported M.2 slot, and any lane or port sharing specified in the motherboard manual. A faster drive may be limited by a slower slot. |
| M.2 SATA SSD | Not guaranteed to work in an M.2 slot | Confirm the board explicitly supports M.2 SATA; some M.2 slots support NVMe only. A USB enclosure can be an alternative if it supports the drive’s protocol and size. |
| RAM | Reusable only if the new platform supports it | DDR generation, DIMM versus SO-DIMM, motherboard and CPU capacity and speed limits, slot availability, and stability if mixing kits. |
| Graphics card | Often reusable | Suitable PCIe slot, card length and thickness, case clearance, PSU capacity and connectors, and display-output needs. |
| Power supply | Possibly reusable | Exact model and condition, form factor, dimensions, wattage, connectors, and any proprietary wiring in a prebuilt system. |
| Case | Often reusable with standard desktop parts | Motherboard form factor and mounting points, GPU length, cooler height, PSU dimensions, radiator and fan support, and front-panel connections. |
| CPU cooler and fans | Fans are often easier to reuse than a heatsink or liquid cooler | Socket mounting hardware, RAM and motherboard clearance, case or radiator fit, cooler condition, and cooling capability for the replacement CPU. |
| CPU | Reusable only with explicit motherboard support | Exact CPU support list, required BIOS version, socket and chipset support, and thermal requirements. |
MSI’s PC compatibility guide covers fit and component-compatibility checks, including GPU clearance, cooler fit, M.2 support, and motherboard size. Intel’s PC-building guide explains that storage formats and RAM support depend on the platform. Use the specifications and manual for the exact replacement motherboard rather than relying on a component’s label alone.
How do you check whether parts go together?
- Identify the exact models. Record the make and model of the motherboard, CPU, RAM kit, graphics card, power supply, cooler, case, and storage drives. If a model is unclear, check the system or component label and its manufacturer documentation.
- Decide what is changing. A GPU-only upgrade has different constraints from replacing the motherboard, CPU, and RAM together. Check each existing part against the components it must work with in the new configuration.
- Verify CPU support and BIOS. Search the replacement motherboard’s CPU support list for the exact processor and the BIOS version it requires. Intel’s desktop processor upgrade guidance explains why socket compatibility and BIOS support both matter; MSI’s CPU upgrade guidance also directs users to the board’s support list. A missing BIOS update can prevent startup or display output.
- Check RAM and storage specifications. Confirm the supported RAM generation, module type, capacity, and speeds. For each M.2 drive, identify whether it is SATA or PCIe NVMe, then check the board’s supported protocol, slot length, and any shared lanes or ports in its manual.
- Check physical fit and power. Compare the motherboard form factor, card dimensions, cooler height or radiator support, and PSU size against the case specifications. Confirm the PSU has the capacity and connectors the parts require. In a prebuilt, consult system-specific documentation because the board, PSU, or wiring may be proprietary.
- Install and verify. Preserve any data you need before moving drives. Follow the component manuals, then start the system and confirm that it detects the installed parts.
What should you check for each type of part?
Storage: SATA and M.2 are not interchangeable labels
A SATA drive needs compatible data and power connections as well as a mounting point. An M.2 drive needs a supported M.2 slot, but the M.2 shape alone does not tell you whether the drive uses SATA or PCIe NVMe. Check the drive specification and motherboard manual together. MSI notes that a PCIe Gen3 NVMe drive can work in a compatible newer-generation PCIe slot, although the drive’s speed is constrained by the slot. If a newer board does not support an old M.2 SATA drive, an M.2 SATA-compatible USB enclosure may let you use it externally; confirm both protocol and physical size before choosing one.

RAM: match the platform, not just the advertised speed
The new motherboard and processor determine which RAM generation, module type, capacity, and speeds are supported. Desktop DIMMs and laptop-style SO-DIMMs are physically different. A faster kit may operate at the system’s supported capability rather than its advertised maximum. If combining modules from separate kits, check the board’s limits and be prepared to verify stability.
Graphics card: check the slot, space, and power
A suitable motherboard slot is only one part of the check. Compare the card’s length and thickness with the case’s available space, and confirm the power supply has the required capacity and connectors. If the upgraded system needs the card to provide display output, account for that as well.

Power supply and case: standard parts are not universal
Do not assess a PSU by wattage alone. Its model, condition, connectors, dimensions, and form factor all matter, and older units or proprietary prebuilt wiring may restrict an upgrade. For a case, check motherboard mounting support and clearance for the GPU, cooler, PSU, fans, and any radiator—not merely whether the side panel closes.
Coolers and CPUs: confirm exact support
A cooler may need a socket-specific mounting kit, and it also has to clear the RAM and motherboard and fit within the case. Noctua’s cooler compatibility FAQ notes that mounting compatibility alone does not guarantee a fit in every build. Check the exact cooler against the CPU, motherboard, memory, and case, and make sure it can handle the replacement CPU’s heat.

Compatibility means a part can work in the new system; it does not automatically mean carrying it over is worthwhile. Consider the part’s condition and whether it meets the upgraded system’s actual requirements. This is especially important for storage health, PSU capacity and connectors, and cooler capability. There is no universal percentage of a PC’s components that can be reused: it depends on the parts you have and the platform you are moving to.
