Start with a properly fitted, locally approved PFD, a leash suited to the water, and a reachable whistle or other signaling device. If you have an inflatable SUP, check its kit and manual before buying a pump, fin, or paddle: those items may already be included, and replacements must fit the board. A dry bag and comfort gear are useful for some outings, but they come after safety and board compatibility.
Buy or pack safety equipment first

Wear a PFD; a leash is not a substitute
Transport Canada says to wear a lifejacket or PFD while paddleboarding and states: “Using the leash attached to the board is not an approved replacement for your lifejacket or PFD.” Rules differ by jurisdiction and location, so check the requirements where you plan to paddle.
Choose the leash for the water
A leash can help keep your board nearby after a fall, but in moving water a snagged leash can pull a paddler underwater. Transport Canada advises using a waist-mounted quick-release or auto-fail leash reachable with both hands if using a leash in moving water. Its guidance describes ankle- or leg-attached leashes for flat, calm water. Do not treat those recommendations as interchangeable: identify the conditions and hazards before choosing a leash, and follow local guidance.
Check your board kit before buying functional gear
An inflatable SUP needs a pump unless one is included. Its fin and paddle may also be part of the package. Kits vary, so inspect the package contents and the manual for your specific board before ordering replacements or add-ons.

Manufacturer guidance from Bestway and Jobe indicates that inflatable sets commonly include a pump, detachable fin, paddle, and leash, but package contents differ. Treat that as a reason to check your own kit—not a guarantee that any particular accessory is included.

Add storage and comfort gear to match the outing
- Dry bag: Useful for organizing and protecting belongings you bring. REI describes it as optional; it is not safety equipment.
- Sun protection: Choose clothing and protection for the sun and length of the outing.
- Thermal layers: Dress for water temperature as well as air temperature. Parks Canada advises accounting for water temperature when choosing clothing.
- Light: A safety light is relevant if paddling after sundown; check applicable local rules.
- Phone pouch or electric pump: Consider these for convenience only after the safety gear and board-compatible basics are covered.
Use a short pre-purchase and pre-trip check
- Check local requirements: Confirm PFD, signaling-device, and other applicable boating rules for your location. Canadian federal guidance from Transport Canada and guidance for Parks Canada locations should not be generalized as rules everywhere.
- Match the leash to the conditions: Distinguish flat, calm water from moving current and consider snag hazards before choosing how to attach a leash.
- Inspect the board package and manual: List what is already included, then confirm connector, valve, pressure, and fin compatibility for any replacements.
- Pack for the forecast and timing: Parks Canada advises checking forecast conditions, wind, tides and swells where relevant; staying close to shore; paddling with a partner; and telling someone your plan. Add clothing and lighting appropriate to conditions and daylight.
