NVIDIA DLSS is a suite of AI-assisted rendering features, not a single setting. Its Super Resolution feature reconstructs a target-resolution image from lower-resolution game input; native rendering instead renders the game at the target resolution through its conventional rendering path. Other DLSS features generate frames, reconstruct ray-traced content, or apply anti-aliasing at native resolution. They serve different purposes, and none makes every DLSS image identical to native rendering.
How DLSS Super Resolution differs from native rendering
With native-resolution rendering, the game renders its image at the resolution you intend to display. With DLSS Super Resolution (SR), the game renders lower-resolution input, then DLSS uses information across frames to construct output at the target resolution. The output may have the same dimensions as a native-rendered image, but its pixels were not all conventionally rendered at that resolution.
NVIDIA describes SR as sampling multiple lower-resolution images and using motion data and feedback from prior frames to construct higher-resolution output. This temporal reconstruction is intended to reduce some of the rendering work needed to produce an image at the target resolution. It is not simply a small image stretched to fit the screen.
| Comparison | Native-resolution rendering | DLSS Super Resolution |
|---|---|---|
| Rendered input | The game renders at the target resolution. | The game renders lower-resolution input. |
| How output is produced | The game’s conventional rendering path produces the target-resolution image. | DLSS reconstructs target-resolution output using multiple inputs and temporal and motion data. |
| Performance aim | No DLSS reconstruction workload, but the game conventionally shades more pixels than it would at a lower input resolution. | Reduce some rendering work while retaining target-resolution output. |
| Image-quality conclusion | A useful comparison baseline, not a guarantee of better-looking output in every game or setting. | NVIDIA says results can rival native rendering, but equivalence is not guaranteed and varies by game. |
Native rendering is therefore a useful baseline, not an automatic image-quality winner. NVIDIA says DLSS results vary with the game engine, content complexity, training, resolution, and GPU workload. The company’s 2019 FAQ describes an earlier DLSS system; its pixel-range examples should not be treated as current specifications.

What the other DLSS features do
DLSS features can be used in combination where a game supports them, but they do different jobs. Check the game’s settings and current support rather than assuming every feature is available whenever a GPU supports DLSS.
Frame Generation
DLSS Frame Generation (FG) uses AI to generate intermediate frames. These generated frames are not conventionally rendered game frames, so the displayed frame rate is not the same thing as the rate at which the game renders frames or updates its simulation and input. NVIDIA says FG works with Reflex to maintain responsiveness; that does not establish identical latency or frame pacing across games and settings.

Multi Frame Generation
Multi Frame Generation (MFG) can generate multiple frames for each rendered frame. NVIDIA describes up to five generated frames per rendered frame on RTX 50 Series and RTX PRO Blackwell-generation GPUs with fifth-generation Tensor Cores. This is a stated capability, not evidence that a game runs at five times its native-rendered performance. DLSS 4.5 also describes “6x” MFG; that multiplier is a frame-generation label, not a universal performance benchmark.
Dynamic Multi Frame Generation
Dynamic MFG adjusts the frame-generation multiplier across scenes. NVIDIA lists this feature for RTX 50 Series GPUs. Its availability still depends on implementation in the particular game.

Ray Reconstruction
DLSS Ray Reconstruction (RR) is intended for demanding ray-traced or path-traced scenes. It uses AI reconstruction in place of conventional hand-tuned denoisers, filling in image information between sampled rays. NVIDIA’s August 2026 announcement describes a second-generation transformer model. RR addresses ray-traced image reconstruction; it is not another name for Super Resolution.
Deep Learning Anti-Aliasing
DLAA applies AI anti-aliasing at native resolution. It uses technology related to Super Resolution but does not lower the input resolution in order to upscale it. NVIDIA describes it as constructing a higher-quality image at native resolution.

These are NVIDIA’s listed feature categories, not a guarantee of support in every title. NVIDIA’s developer page says DLSS 4.5 includes Dynamic and 6x MFG and a second-generation transformer model; it also reports a September 2026 Unreal Engine plugin package update. Because features and game support change, check the individual game and current NVIDIA driver or app information for the version you use.
When DLSS may help—and why results vary
Super Resolution is aimed at reducing rendering work while producing output at a higher target resolution. NVIDIA says benefits depend on GPU workload and resolution: a GPU-limited game may have more room to benefit, while low resolutions, high frame rates, or another system bottleneck can reduce the gain. NVIDIA’s FAQ calls its approximate discussion of a 60 FPS point an approximation; the exact point varies with game and settings, so it is not a reliable universal threshold.
Appearance also depends on the game, engine, content, and training. There is no basis here for claiming that DLSS always looks as good as—or better than—native rendering. Nor does a higher displayed FPS number by itself show that controls feel more responsive: generated frames and conventionally rendered frames are different, and the cited NVIDIA material does not establish equal latency or frame pacing for every configuration.
How to make a fair DLSS-versus-native comparison
When comparing screenshots or performance measurements, keep the conditions clear. A comparison is difficult to interpret if rendering resolution, graphics options, or ray tracing differ along with DLSS.
- Use the same game, game build, scene, and output resolution.
- Keep graphics settings consistent, including ray tracing or path tracing, and state whether Ray Reconstruction is enabled.
- Identify the DLSS feature and mode, including Super Resolution input mode and any Frame Generation multiplier.
- Record the GPU generation, the base conventionally rendered frame rate, and latency information when available; do not treat generated-frame rate as a substitute for either.
- Assess image behavior in motion as well as still images, since the reconstruction uses temporal information.
NVIDIA’s official DLSS developer overview and GeForce DLSS feature page describe current features and compatibility. Its DLSS FAQ provides workload caveats and historical context, while its Ray Reconstruction announcement covers the feature’s ray-tracing role.
