In certain places, distinctive fallout signatures may also help distinguish local from regional habitat use. But an isotope signal alone usually cannot reconstruct an animal’s full migration route: that requires knowing how and when the tissue formed and combining isotope evidence with other markers or tracking data.
What can nuclear-test isotopes reveal?
Different isotope signals answer different questions. Bomb-pulse carbon-14 is principally a timing marker; persistent fallout radionuclides can record exposure; and stable-isotope patterns can help indicate geographic origin or movement when compared with environmental reference data.
| Method | What it can support | Spatial and timing limits |
|---|---|---|
| Bomb-pulse carbon-14 | Estimating when biological material formed | The atmospheric signal was widespread, so it is not inherently a location marker. Tissue turnover and diet affect interpretation. |
| Fallout uranium or plutonium | Evidence of exposure to environments carrying anthropogenic radionuclides; in some settings, comparison of distinctive signatures may help assess local versus regional occupancy | Spatial specificity depends on the site and the signature. Exposure does not establish that an animal was present during a nuclear test or reveal its precise route. |
| Stable isotopes, such as hydrogen and oxygen | Inferring movement between habitats or possible geographic origin from tissue values and environmental patterns | Interpretation depends on tissue type, its growth or turnover window, and suitable reference patterns. |
How does the bomb pulse work?
Atmospheric weapons testing caused atmospheric carbon-14 to rise sharply and then decline. Atmospheric carbon-14 nearly doubled from 1955 to 1963, according to “Bomb Pulse Biology” (2013). The excess carbon entered food webs through photosynthesis. An animal incorporating that carbon into growing tissue can therefore leave a signal that helps estimate when the material formed.
This is a biological clock, not a geographic breadcrumb. The date applies to the tissue’s formation, not automatically to the animal’s birth, arrival at a particular place, or entire life history. Diet and tissue turnover also matter when interpreting the measurement.

Can fallout signatures show where an animal has been?
Persistent radionuclides record exposure, not a route by themselves
Anthropogenic uranium or plutonium retained in tissue can provide evidence of exposure to contaminated environments. A detected signature does not prove the animal was present during a test: exposure can occur later, including through food or habitat. To infer movement, scientists need to interpret the signature alongside the species’ ecology, the tissue’s history, and other geographic evidence.
Sequentially grown tissue can preserve a timeline
Some tissues grow in layers. If the growth chronology is understood, sampling successive layers can reveal how a radionuclide signature changed over time, rather than providing only a single bulk measurement. A 2023 study of turtle, tortoise, and sea-turtle scute reported changing anthropogenic uranium compositions through sequential scute layers in a candidate specimen, describing scute as a potential archive for nuclear histories and environmental monitoring in localized settings. See “Anthropogenic uranium signatures in turtles, tortoises, and sea turtles from nuclear sites” (PNAS Nexus, 2023).

A turtle example illustrates the distinction
The study describes a green turtle scute collected at Enewetak Atoll. Enewetak and neighboring Bikini Atoll hosted 67 nuclear weapons tests from 1946 to 1958. Green turtles migrate and forage broadly, but the specimen’s exact migratory history was unknown. Its presence at Enewetak supports an inference of likely foraging in the atoll environment before death; it does not provide a complete travel history.
When can test-specific signatures help distinguish occupancy?
At the Montebello Islands, a 2018 survey reported that plutonium signatures from three tests were distinct from one another and from worldwide fallout. The authors say these signatures could aid in determining local versus regional occupancy and, alongside stable isotopes and other markers, may be useful in migration and habitat-use studies for turtles and other species. This is a site-specific possibility, not a general method for recovering precise routes from fallout ratios alone. Read the Montebello Islands survey proceedings hosted by ANSTO (Johansen et al., 2018).

How do stable isotopes complement fallout evidence?
Stable-isotope methods provide a different kind of clue. The IAEA explains that hydrogen (δ²H) and oxygen (δ¹⁸O) ratios in animal tissues can be used to study movements between feeding habitats, while carbon and nitrogen ratios can help characterize animal populations. These values reflect environmental inputs during tissue growth or turnover, so researchers must account for when and how the sampled tissue formed. See the IAEA technical publication on nuclear techniques for tracing and monitoring animal disease and production.
Stable isotopes are most useful for geographic inference when tissue measurements can be compared with environmental reference patterns. Combining those patterns with fallout signatures can help distinguish exposure history from habitat use; telemetry or other independent geographic evidence may still be needed to establish a route.

What evidence is needed to infer a migration route?
- A tissue with interpretable timing: establish whether it grows continuously, in layers, or turns over, and identify the period represented by the sample.
- A known isotope signal: distinguish a broad timing signal such as bomb-pulse carbon-14 from a persistent, potentially site-specific fallout signature.
- Environmental and ecological context: compare stable-isotope values with relevant reference patterns and account for the species’ feeding and movement behavior.
- Independent corroboration: use additional markers or tracking and geographic evidence when a claim concerns a precise route rather than exposure or broad occupancy.
For a broader introduction to isotope methods in migration studies, including terrestrial and aquatic examples, isoscapes, and study design, see Tracking Animal Migration with Stable Isotopes, Second Edition, edited by Keith A. Hobson and Leonard I. Wassenaar (Academic Press, 2018). It covers isotope-based migration methods more broadly than nuclear-test fallout.
