NFL injury reports use separate labels for practice participation, expected game availability and the final game-day roster. “Limited” describes practice reps; “questionable” means it is uncertain whether a player will play; “inactive” means the player is not on the active game-day roster. One label does not automatically determine the next.
How to read an NFL injury report
Read the report in three layers: first, how much the player practiced; second, the team’s game-status designation; and finally, whether the player is active or inactive for the game. The NFL presents practice participation and game status as separate fields on its injury report. A practice label is not a diagnosis or a promise about availability.
| Layer | What it tells you | Labels |
|---|---|---|
| Practice participation | How much the player took part in a particular practice. | Did Not Participate, Limited Participation, Full Participation |
| Game status | The team’s stated expectation about whether the player will participate in the game. | Questionable, Doubtful, Out |
| Game-day roster | Whether the player is included among the players active for that game. | Active or Inactive |
What practice participation labels mean
Did Not Participate
The player did not take part in that practice session. This describes the session, not the final game-day decision.
Limited Participation
Limited participation means the player performed less than 100% of their normal repetitions. That is the NFL’s formal definition; it does not by itself mean the player is questionable, doubtful or out. A player may have limited practice participation and a separate game-status designation.

Full Participation
Full participation means the player took part in 100% of their normal repetitions. It is still a practice measure, so check the game-status field and game-day inactive announcement rather than treating “full” as confirmation the player will play.
What questionable, doubtful and out mean
| Game-status label | NFL meaning | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Questionable | It is uncertain whether the player will play. | It is neither a definite absence nor a guarantee of playing. |
| Doubtful | The player is unlikely to participate. | It indicates a lower expectation of availability than questionable, but is not the final roster outcome. |
| Out | The player will not play. | The team has designated the player as unavailable for that game. |
The NFL Competition Committee’s 2016 policy revision defined questionable as uncertainty about whether the player would play. The same revision removed “Probable” from game-status reporting: the league said approximately 95% of players previously listed probable had played, and directed teams to use questionable when a genuine availability question remained. That historical figure concerns players formerly designated probable; it is not a current estimate of how often questionable players play.

What inactive means
Inactive is the game-day roster outcome: the player is not included among those active for that game. It is different from a practice label and from a game-status estimate. Check the team’s official inactive announcement for the final roster decision.
For the 2026 season, the NFL’s roster FAQ says teams may have 47 active players on game day, or 48 if they have at least eight offensive linemen. The regular-season and playoff inactive list is drawn from a 53-player roster, with possible expansion to 54 or 55 through standard practice-squad elevations. These are roster limits, not injury classifications.
An NFL Operations policy dated 2017 says teams submitted inactive lists at a meeting 90 minutes before kickoff. Because that source is dated 2017, it does not establish that the same timing remains the current rule. Use the team’s announcement and current league guidance for a particular game.
Why an injury report may not say “injury”
Not every report entry is an injury. Teams may report a player as resting, ill or dealing with a personal matter. The NFL policy distinguishes rest that is not injury-related from injury status, and current reports can include non-injury notes. Read the stated reason alongside the participation label instead of assuming every entry reflects an injury.

The NFL’s 2026–27 important-dates schedule says clubs file practice reports by 4:00 p.m. New York time, or as soon as possible after practice, on the days set for that game. For Sunday games, the schedule specifies Wednesday, Thursday and Friday reports; the sequence shifts for games played on other days. Check the official report for the particular week, since a player’s status can change between reports and kickoff.
