iOS 27 adds two reported improvements to RCS conversations in Messages: inline replies and more faithful Tapback reactions. Replies can stay visibly connected to the specific message they answer, while reactions to media can appear as reactions instead of fallback text such as “Ryan loved an image.” Availability can vary by iPhone model, region, language, and carrier.
What’s new for RCS conversations in iOS 27?
Ryan Christoffel reported on October 5, 2026, that the Messages changes are part of RCS 2.7. They affect conversations with people using Android and improve how two familiar messaging features appear across the conversation.

For inline replies, the practical difference is context: instead of a response appearing without a clear link to an earlier message, participants can see which message it refers to. For Tapbacks, the change is in how a reaction is represented in the thread, especially when reacting to a photo or other media.
9to5Mac says Apple’s iOS 27 user guide lists RCS features including “read receipts, typing indicators, Tapbacks, inline replies, and high-resolution photos and videos.” That list is reported wording from the guide, not a guarantee that every feature works for every user in every location. 9to5Mac’s report describes RCS as bringing Messages closer to the iMessage experience; it does not mean RCS and iMessage are identical.

Will the new RCS features work on every iPhone?
Not necessarily. Apple’s iOS 27 guide cautions that new features and apps can vary by iPhone model, region, language, and carrier. An iOS update by itself therefore does not establish that RCS service, or every RCS capability, is available for a particular line or market.
The reviewed Apple support pages do not provide a carrier-by-carrier or country-by-country list of RCS availability. If you need to know whether RCS works with your carrier and location, check current information from Apple and your carrier rather than assuming the update guarantees service.

Other Messages changes in iOS 27
A September 17, 2026, roundup from 9to5Mac describes additional Messages changes beyond RCS:
- A Drawing iMessage app for sketches and handwritten notes.
- Personalized Smart Reply suggestions.
- Consolidated notifications for multiple Tapbacks.
- Usability and performance refinements, including retrying failed messages, faster message loading and cross-device syncing, media thumbnails, and search by phone number or nickname.
One-tap suggestions appeared in beta but were reportedly removed from the shipping version. The roundup said Apple expected them to return in a future update; that report does not establish whether they are available in a later point release. Apple’s press-release wording, quoted by the roundup, describes suggestions that can help with tasks such as creating a reminder or note, but it should not be read as confirmation that the feature is currently present.
