Research gives some reason to try a lighter mouse—especially for target acquisition at lower sensitivity—but it does not establish a universal gram target or show that switching mice will improve your rank. Choose by comparing weight alongside shape, grip, sensitivity, and how reliably you can start and stop the mouse.
What the studies say about mouse weight
The available studies suggest weight can matter, but they do not settle on one ideal value. Their results apply to the tested participants, equipment, and tasks—not every game or competitive player.
Target acquisition: 50 g, 60 g, 90 g, and 100 g
A 2021 study asked 72 video game players to perform a target-acquisition task with mice weighing 50 g, 60 g, 90 g, and 100 g. The authors concluded that “using a lighter mouse at lower sensitivity may augment target acquisition performance among video gamers.” The wording is deliberately qualified: it points to a possible benefit in the tested context, not a guarantee that the lightest mouse will work best for you or improve tournament results. Professional gamers: 80 g versus 87 g
A 2023 study of professional gamers compared 80 g and 87 g mice, as well as wireless and wired connections. Its highlights report better wireless results on some measured outcomes and a preference for the very light mouse over the light mouse. Since connection type was also studied and the weights were close together, the findings do not isolate weight as the cause of every difference or identify a precise optimum. How to choose a weight for your own setup
Use the study findings as a reason to test, not as a shopping rule. Compare a lighter candidate with your current mouse while keeping familiar settings steady, then assess how it feels across repeated sessions. This is practical advice, not a protocol validated by the studies.
- Check control: Notice whether you can start and stop the mouse reliably without unwanted movement. Your own control is more useful than pursuing the lowest number on a spec sheet.
- Consider shape and grip: A mouse that fits your hand and grip may suit you better than a lighter one with an awkward shape. Manufacturer guidance also lists shape and grip alongside weight, sensor accuracy, and latency as relevant factors. See Logitech G’s guidance on mouse ergonomics.
- Keep sensitivity in view: The target-acquisition study’s conclusion specifically mentions lower sensitivity. Weight should not be evaluated as though settings are irrelevant; keep sensitivity consistent when comparing mice.
- Match the task and session: The professional-player study examined performance, muscle activity, and preference in its gaming tasks. Those results are bounded by its participants and test conditions; they do not establish a medical or fatigue benefit.
How to interpret lightweight mouse claims
Terms such as “lightweight” and “esports” describe product positioning, not independent proof that a mouse will improve your performance. For example, Razer describes the DeathAdder V3 as an esports mouse and claims a weight reduction of more than 25% compared with its predecessor; Logitech describes a redesign of the G502 intended to reduce weight.
