On February 7, 2023, Microsoft announced an AI-powered Bing search experience alongside updates to its Edge browser, presenting the two as a connected “Copilot for the Web.” CEO Satya Nadella said, “In fact, a race starts today in terms of what you can expect.” The line expressed Microsoft’s competitive ambition, not proof that it had won a search race.
What Microsoft announced
Microsoft introduced a new Bing experience and an updated Edge browser at its February 7, 2023 event. The company’s pitch was to bring conventional search results, AI-generated answers based on web information, conversational chat, and content-generation assistance into a connected experience. Executives called this combination a “Copilot for the Web.” Microsoft’s announcement and the event transcript document what the company presented.
The event framed the product around four intended benefits: better search results, direct answers, conversational chat, and help generating content. Microsoft’s demonstrations included checking whether a loveseat would fit in a car, finding substitutes for eggs, creating a five-day itinerary and meal plan, and generating a trivia game. In Edge, presenters showed assistance with summarizing a PDF, comparing information across documents, and transforming a code snippet. These were Microsoft’s demonstrations of intended uses, not independent tests of accuracy or performance.
How the announced experience differed from a conventional search workflow
Microsoft positioned AI assistance as an addition to familiar search and browsing, not simply a replacement for links. The distinctions below describe that product positioning; they are not comparative quality scores.
#1 Best Overall
| Workflow | Typical task and interaction | Positioned output or context |
|---|---|---|
| Conventional Bing search | Enter keywords to find websites, articles, quick facts, or product information. | Search results and links for the user to explore. |
| Copilot Search in Bing | Ask a contextual question and continue with follow-up questions or deeper exploration. | Summarized answers with cited sources and suggestions for further exploration, according to Microsoft’s current description. |
| Copilot in Edge | Ask for help while viewing a page or document in the browser. | Browser-integrated assistance for summarizing, comparing, and answering questions about page content, according to Microsoft. |
Microsoft’s current descriptions are not identical to the 2023 preview. Its Bing product page describes Copilot Search in Bing, while its Edge features page describes Copilot integrated into the browser. Microsoft says Bing feature availability and functionality may vary by device, market, and browser version, so the 2023 launch demonstrations should not be treated as a guarantee of present-day access or behavior.
What Microsoft said powered the 2023 Bing experience
Microsoft said Bing used a next-generation OpenAI large language model customized for search. It also described “Prometheus Model” as a proprietary collection of techniques connecting that model with Bing’s search index and query methods. Microsoft said this approach was intended to improve answer relevance, provide web links and citations, use fresher information, better understand geolocation, and add safety checks. Those are launch-era claims by Microsoft, not independently established measurements.
Microsoft also said it had applied AI to its core search-ranking engine and called the resulting relevance improvement the largest in two decades. The cited event presentation did not provide independent evaluation data for that assertion. The announcement establishes what Microsoft claimed about the system, not how it compared with other search engines in controlled testing.
What the “race starts today” line meant—and did not mean
Nadella’s statement was a competitive framing for Microsoft’s announcement. It signaled the company’s view that AI could change expectations for search and browsing; it did not demonstrate a market outcome, a lead over competitors, or a measured improvement for users.

At the event, Microsoft executive Yusuf Mehdi described the ambition as “the next generation of search and browsing” and an integrated experience combining a search engine, browser, and chat. That statement, too, describes Microsoft’s goal rather than evidence that every part of the experience performed as intended.
Launch-era figures and availability
During the February 2023 presentation, Mehdi cited figures about search behavior and volume. The transcript supplies no methodology alongside them, so they should be read as statements Microsoft made at launch—not as independently verified or current statistics.

What to take away
Microsoft’s February 2023 announcement joined AI-assisted search, chat, content generation, and browser help under the “Copilot for the Web” idea. The phrase “the race starts today” captured the company’s intent to compete around that vision. For current capabilities, Microsoft now describes Copilot Search in Bing and Copilot in Edge separately, with availability varying by market, device, and browser version. Neither the launch claims nor the present product descriptions amount to an independent performance assessment.
