Matter 1.6 adds new ways to set up and administer compatible smart-home devices, plus richer thermostat and sensor information. Announced by the Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA) on June 17, 2026, it is a feature update—not a launch of new device categories. Whether any feature works in your home depends on support from the particular device, its firmware, and the controller or platform you use.
What Matter 1.6 changes
The release adds capabilities that can make setup easier, let authorized controllers share administration, and give platforms more useful device information. The CSA has not published a product-by-product implementation list in its announcement, so these are standard-level capabilities rather than assurances about specific products.
Commission devices over NFC
Matter 1.6 permits the full commissioning exchange over near-field communication (NFC). A user may be able to set up a device before it is powered—for example, a bulb or an in-wall switch that has not yet been installed. This goes beyond earlier NFC onboarding-payload support, where NFC supplied setup information but Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) still completed commissioning. The practical benefit depends on both the device and the setup app implementing the new flow. CSA Matter 1.6 announcement
Let multiple controllers administer one shared network
Joint Fabric allows multiple user-authorized controllers to co-administer one shared Matter network. That differs from earlier Enhanced Multi-Admin approaches, which share access across separate ecosystem fabrics. The CSA describes a central datastore, administrators who can be added or removed independently of devices, and Joint Fabric participation counting as one fabric toward device capacity. This may suit a home using multiple platforms, a new-construction handover, or a professionally managed property; it does not mean every controller can join every home without authorization or platform support. - Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Give thermostats a way to evaluate recommendations
With Thermostat Suggestions, an ecosystem can recommend a change and a thermostat can evaluate it against user preferences and current context before acting. The feature is about recommendations and evaluation, not a guarantee that a thermostat will accept every command. It also does not establish that a particular thermostat or ecosystem has implemented the feature. CSA Matter 1.6 announcement
Share device limits and capabilities more clearly
Devices can communicate capabilities and operational limits in a standardized way. A controller can then represent what a device can actually do more accurately, rather than treating all devices of a broad type as interchangeable. The announcement does not specify which individual products will expose which limits.

Provide security-sensor history and alarm installation status
Security sensors can provide interoperable event history, giving a platform past activity as well as current status. Smoke and carbon monoxide alarms can indicate when they have been removed from their installed position, helping a platform represent installation status. These features improve the information available to compatible platforms; they do not, on their own, establish a particular alert, monitoring service, or response.
Does Matter 1.6 add new compatible device categories?
No new categories are announced for Matter 1.6. The update adds functions for devices and controllers within Matter, rather than expanding the category list, according to the CSA’s June 17, 2026 announcement. The CSA FAQ lists categories including bridges, controllers, door locks, HVAC controls, lighting and electrical devices, media devices, safety and security sensors, and window coverings and shades. The FAQ is the place to check the Alliance’s category guidance: CSA Matter FAQ.

How Matter, networks, and bridges relate
Matter is an interoperability standard, not a replacement name for every network technology in a smart home. The CSA identifies Bluetooth Low Energy for setup and Wi-Fi, Thread, and Ethernet for connecting devices. BLE’s role in setup is distinct from the network used for device connectivity. CSA Matter FAQ
A bridge can bring some devices using other protocols into a Matter ecosystem. The CSA FAQ names Zigbee and Z-Wave as examples. That does not make Zigbee or Z-Wave native Matter transports: compatibility depends on the bridge and on which device features it exposes. If a feature is available only through a bridge, do not assume the bridged device supports every Matter capability directly.

What Matter 1.6 means for an existing smart home
A specification update does not automatically update devices already in a home. The CSA says Matter 1.6 is available for device makers and platforms to integrate, and that the path from specification to products varies by company and product type. A Matter logo—or a product that supports an earlier Matter release—does not by itself confirm support for NFC commissioning, Joint Fabric, Thermostat Suggestions, or the new status information. CSA Matter 1.6 announcement
The CSA FAQ directs users to check with brands about device support. For a feature-specific answer, check the manufacturer’s product and firmware information as well as the controller or platform’s compatibility notes. The relevant questions are:

- Does the exact device model support the Matter 1.6 feature you want?
- Is that support enabled in the device’s current firmware, or does it depend on a rollout?
- Does your controller or smart-home platform support the same feature?
- If the device uses Zigbee, Z-Wave, or another non-Matter protocol, is a bridge involved, and does it expose the relevant capability?
The CSA’s specification index lists Matter 1.6 and 1.6.1 document families. That confirms the document families are listed, but not that any particular retail product implements a feature. The available CSA announcement and FAQ do not identify which retail thermostats or platform releases have shipped Thermostat Suggestions support; consult current manufacturer and platform release information before relying on that feature.
