Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) users may be able to use NetApp ONTAP data-management capabilities through a fully managed, OCI-native storage service—but it is not generally available yet. Oracle and NetApp announced the planned service on September 29, 2026, and said general availability was expected within 12 months. The announcement describes intended benefits and target workloads, not a released service with published specifications or performance results.

What Oracle and NetApp announced

The planned Oracle Cloud Infrastructure NetApp Storage Service is described as a fully managed storage service that brings NetApp ONTAP data-management capabilities to OCI. Oracle and NetApp say it is intended to help customers migrate, run, protect, and modernize workloads in Oracle’s cloud. Oracle and NetApp’s September 29, 2026 announcement is the available source for the service description and timeline.

For organizations already using ONTAP, the intended change is access to familiar storage-management capabilities in OCI rather than having to replace all storage processes with unfamiliar ones. The vendors say the service is designed to reduce application redesign and storage-management changes when moving ONTAP-based workloads to OCI. That is a stated goal, not evidence that migrations will be automatic, seamless, or suitable for every application.

What users are expected to manage it with

The announcement names three familiar management avenues: the OCI Console and SDKs, ONTAP APIs, and existing operational workflows. It does not list the individual control-plane functions, supported API operations, or which tasks can be completed through each interface. Existing ONTAP skills may therefore be relevant, but teams should not assume that every current command, integration, or runbook will work unchanged.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Which workloads are in scope

Oracle and NetApp identify these workload categories as intended use cases:

  • Databases and enterprise applications
  • Virtualized environments
  • Electronic design automation (EDA) and high-performance computing (HPC)
  • Regulated applications
  • AI data pipelines

Those categories indicate the service’s intended breadth, not a compatibility guarantee for a particular application. The announcement does not specify supported protocols, configurations, capacity limits, or workload-specific requirements. Teams will need product documentation to determine whether a given architecture fits.

What the announcement does not establish

The service is planned, not documented as generally available. Oracle and NetApp said general availability was planned within 12 months of September 29, 2026, but did not give an exact launch date, regional rollout, or price. Oracle’s announcement also says development, release timing, and pricing may change.

It also provides no published service levels, performance benchmarks, capacity or scale limits, durability terms, backup and recovery details, or independent customer results. Those are key inputs for production planning and procurement, so the announcement alone is not enough to size a deployment or compare costs.

How this relates to Oracle Base Database Service

Oracle’s existing Base Database Service documentation describes database systems running on OCI virtual machines. Its FAQ describes block-volume storage and says pricing depends on factors including database edition, compute shape, compute metric, and storage capacity. See Oracle’s pages on Base Database Service and its Base Database Service FAQ.

These pages provide context for an existing OCI database option; they do not explain how the planned NetApp service integrates with Oracle Database or whether it can replace storage used by Base Database Service. No product-specific integration details are established in the announcement.

What to verify before planning a move

Once official service documentation is available, use it to answer the questions that determine technical fit and operational impact:

  • Which workloads, protocols, configurations, and OCI regions are supported?
  • What are the capacity, throughput, latency, and scale limits?
  • What availability, durability, backup, and recovery commitments apply?
  • Which migration methods are supported, and which tasks remain the customer’s responsibility?
  • How do network design and access controls work in the target OCI environment?
  • What are the prices and any relevant licensing requirements?

Until those details are published, treat ONTAP continuity as the vendors’ intended benefit rather than a confirmed migration outcome. NetApp Senior Vice President and General Manager of Cloud Storage and Services Pravjit Tiwana said, “Customers want the flexibility to move AI and enterprise workloads to the cloud without giving up operational simplicity, data management, and reliability.” OCI Senior Vice President of Partnerships Konstantinos (kp) Papamiltiadis said, “Enterprises shouldn’t have to rebuild their data infrastructure to move to the cloud.” Both statements are from the vendors’ announcement, not independent customer testimony.
